Welcome, downsbri000.

Is this 8 release preview? How long have you been running? Have you looked in the event log? Freeze after a certain time or during a program?

My laptop is my only computer. It is about 2 years old.
I have a feeling Avast could be doing it. I don't know for sure, but I don't think Avast has an updated version specifically for Windows 8.

Can you describe what EXACTLY happens when it freezes up?

Note that that was fixed in the RTM (it's caused by certain things in the way newer processors worked, and how the Windows kernel interpreted those things). If you're still having issues with the RTM and you're on a brand-new Intel or AMD CPU, you should probably contact Microsoft as that should have already been fixed. If you're on the RP or DP, you're going to have this issue and the link above is the only workaround short of upgrading to RTM for the fix.

no one can be certain of anything regarding any fix.
In all cases, Troubleshooting is a best guess off of knowledge of how PC's/OS's work, and then it's all trial and error from there.
Then from feedback on the thing that finally resolved the issue.

Sometimes it's a 1 hit thing and it's fixed, other times it could take trying 10 different things, and then it could be one thing or a combination of those 10 things that fixes an issue.

Troubleshooting is not an exact science and no one, not one person can be 100% guaranteed that any fix is going to work for everyone always.

This is the nature of computers, it is what it is, the way it is.
