Scheduled Backups

I have set up a PC with Macrium Reflect to perform scheduled back ups. It is an Image backup. No one is using the PC when it does the Image backup nor is anyone on the netwrok. I have it backing up to a NAS (WD My Cloud Mirror) over the network. The PC is connected wireless to the network with a Netgear R6200v2. The backup started today at 2:00 and it is 9:00 now and its at 96% complete. Although this is my first time doing it this way, when I do image backups using a USB connection with an external drive, it takes somewhere around 45min to 1 hour to complete.

Wanted to get some input on why this process takes so long. Is there anything I can check or do that may speed this process up?

My backups can run from 1 hour+- for "C drive" and 2 hours +- for "D drive". As long as you are making restorable backups, you're doing everything aok! :)

I back up to an External 4GB High Speed USB3 Hard Drive ...

My system Image takes around 15 Minutes, (256GB SSD 50% Used) giving a "Normal Compression Level" Backup File of about 50GB

My Data backup takes around 7-8 Hours to complete and the Normal Compression Backup File is over 1.25TB

This shows that backups will basically take as long as They need to back up - I carry on working normally during the System Backup, but obviously set the Data backup running late in the day to run overnight, (I prefer to start and ensure that any backup is running correctly so manually control them).

The only issue I would see with your set-up is the use of a wireless connection rather than some form of Wired Network connection or USB to a local drive -

As long as your wireless signal is robust enough and/or your backup software can take the occasional dropped connection without the whole job failing then it's a viable method, but as an Old School SysAdmin I would prefer Wired to wireless where possible :)

copiman, is there any way you could test a few times a hard-wired backup? I'm wondering if hard-wire is at least more "safer" if not also "quicker"? By safer and/or quicker, I mean the program's activity of getting the read material over to, onto, the NAS.

Thanks everyone for your response. This is my first time using a NAS for backups versus my usual USB connected external HDD. I would love to have everything wired but with the building structure this would be very cumbersome. I guess I will just settle for the wireless connections and the slower backups. The good thing is they are successfully backing up so I should be thankful for that.

I was however wondering if it is possible to have the PCs automatically do the images even though someone shutdown the PC prior to the scheduled task? I am using Macrium for my scheduled images. Right now we just leave the PCs on all the time which I am not a big fan of.

Thanks again for everyone's help and sorry for the late response but I had tests this week.

Scheduled backups can be arranged; I have never done so, I cannot tell you how to do the set ups. Just be sure to check up on the alleged backups made overnight, if anything interrupts a Macrium Reflect, I believe the partial is either deleted or simply sits there unusable.
