Computer intermittently slow, sfc /scannow reports errors.

Hi there

I have an HP notebook that has been getting slower and slower in recent weeks. At first I thought it was because of the hugely oversized .PST files, and after archiving and compacting there has been some improvement, but that's not the end of the story. The machine still slows right down to a complete stop at intervals (from seconds to minutes) aftewhich it just picks up and takes of again as if nothing had gone wrong. These hesitations can also be from seconds to minutes (although usually it's less than 30 seconds).

I ran sfc /scannow which reported
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some
of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not
supported in offline servicing scenarios.
I have looked at the log file mentioned but there are so many lines with incomprehensible information in them I thought someone here is bound to have a much better idea than I do as to "what now".

Any pointers appreciated, thanks!

P.S. I ran Seagate's Seatools disk diagnostics and it reports the disk is 100% OK after the long self-test

Try running this sequence of commands from a Elevated Command Prompt:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
SFC /scannow

Run sfc /scannow up to 3 times.

On top of what Ztruker said, you may want to try defragmentation if it is a standard HDD or trim if it is a SSD.

Thanks Ztruker and ArazelEternal - appreciate the input

In fact after posting the above I ran defrag - three times - and reduced fragmentation from 40 GB to nil, and the performance is several thousand times better :D

But I still want to go through those file repair procedures because it bothers me to know there are errors. User can't release the PC to me for a day or so, but I'll report back once completed. Thanks again.

Glad to help, even though you did what I suggested before I suggested it. [emoji846]
