Back to Win 8; would like to back up the HD

Long story short, my HP Envy's HD died, and with a new HD I am back to Win 8.1. I may stay here awhile--not sure yet.

I want to create a system restore drive on my HD in case this ever happens again. But I've never tried anything like this before. Can someone walk me through a procedure that won't risk my destroying my computer?

Do you mean you want to make a complete disc image that you can recover back to ?

W8/8.1 has an inbuilt tool that can do this, and you can store the image either on another partition on your drive or on an external drive. External is preferred for archiving backups long term. A disk image allows you to restore the computer to exactly how it was at the instant you made the image.

Hmm. I was thinking more of a boot disk. I.e., if I somehow can't get to the desktop via ordinary bootup means.
