Hi
I have a desktop Acer computer on Windows 8.1 that is running very slow. It's always been slow since it went to 8.1 but has now got the the stage it is ready to be heaved out the window!
It is not used for gaming.
I am running the paid versions of Malware Bytes and Kaspersky in the background. I am also running the free version of Malware Anti Exploit in the background. I have scanned for any issues and none found. Using Aulogics Defrag Professional, I have defragged the hard drive and scanned for errors - none found. I have run CCleaner (free version) and cleaned up junk files and cleared up registry errors using it too.
The problems are -
Computer is extremely slow to action anything - i.e to open any program and sometimes not at all. Yesterday I was unable to open Firefox at all. IE Explorer also very slow to open. To bring up the Shut Down button takes a very long time. The actual closing down of the computer also takes a very long time or does not happen so I have switched it off at the mains although this is not every time. If I switch off at the mains (which I know I should not but was the only other option it seemed), the computer will then reboot back up if I switch the mains on, even if the next day!
Internet - I have 2 other computers plus this one in the same room - one of them is on wifi and the other is hard wired into the router along with this one. I am on Fibre broadband (up to 38mg). The other 2 computers get excellent speeds - this one less than 10mg even though it is hard wired into the router. The router is 4 ft away on another desk - nothing blocking it. The router is 6 months old (Sky).
I have already spoken to my ISP and they sent BT out - the poor speed on this computer is still not resolved so they think it is the computer . Anything from the internet on this computer takes a very long time and it is really jumpy. Speed tests using the BT test site BTW Performance Test which is the one the OpenReach engineer used show speeds around 10mg on this computer. (The other computers are much faster).
I was wondering if buying more memory may help?
I would appreciate any help regarding the above. I'm not a computer boffin so would appreciate easy to understand replies!
thank you
ps
I have just done the WEI and my system score is 3.7.
