Laptop now very slow, acting very erratically

Kind of suddenly, it slowed way down and started operating very poorly. Every single time I click on something, it takes a long time to change, sometimes up to a minute. Screen jumps around and changes by itself. Scrolls erratically. I type, and sometimes wait for the letters to appear. Nothing seems to function the way it should. Just now, the screen shifted to right half of screen, couldn't move it. Then only the desktop icons were there, but shifted to the right half of screen. So frustrated, ready to buy new one. This Acer laptop is 3 1/2 yrs old. Ran my Avast antivirus. Ran MalwareBytes. Originally came with W8, about 6mos ago I went to W8.1.

May have a lot of background garbage running. What does Task Manager show for CPU usage and processes running? Is there a process using a lot CPU even when the laptop is idle?

popeye, Im not good at this stuff, but I did manage to find Task Manager, and I looked under 'Processes' and under CPU. Shows Internet Explorer going between 7 and 12 percent. All but a couple of other small things are at '0' percent.

And what is that "Recommended Fix" thing I've seen? Is that an ad, or a real recommended fix here?

Not sure what you mean by "Recommended Fix" thing. If you scroll to the bottom of the page there is a list of similar threads here with some of them being resolved/fixed. Good suggestions in those also.
