Hello All,
I just found out that windows 8.1 does not have a backup and restore application as it has in windows 7.
So to work around this, I also know that "The Norton Security Suite" has this application as part of its security and virus protection. So I intend to use Norton for my backups and restores. Also "Comcast" (Xfinity) has this program available free as part of its services. But I think you must have phone, internet & tv as a subscriber. So check it out. If you are presently a Comcast customer, then sign in and then just below the sign in box, there should be a link for the free download. If it is not there, then enter in the search box "Norton Security Suite" and on the results page at the top right, you will see a link for the free download.

As I get used to windows 8.1, I also see that Files such as pictures, music, documents, etc can be backed up using "File History" which requires a usb drive or network. I am not familiar with using network. Now I may have to reconsider which path to follow. I will contact the "Norton Community" to see what happens to the backup if for whatever reason the Norton software needs to be re-downloaded.

I decided to use Norton backup and restore application to see how it goes. I had thought that the backup was stored on the server but I thought wrong. The application gives you a choice. So I picked floppy disk. The first attempt failed. No reason was given. The second attempt was successful. So I will stay with Norton. I also noticed that after I installed windows 8.1 the performance of the computer improved when I started to download all the missing windows updates.

Those 4-3/4 inch silver disks are called floppys; correct? I used a Memorex dvd-rw to back up my files.
