The PC boots to the Windows login screen in 10 seconds with fast start-up enabled in power options (5 seconds of this is the BIOS initiation).
However, when I disable fast start-up, the PC takes 25-30 seconds to boot to the Windows login screen. This is slower than I expected. I've disable unnecessary start-up programs using Autoruns.
Any ideas what to check and do people generally enable fast start-up when using a SSD system disc?
25-30 seconds is more then my average time to boot to the login screen and i'm not yet using SSD.
Generally those who have their OS on the SSD don't need fast start-up as it doesn't increase their boot time.
I'd uncheck every service in msconfig to check if any program is a cause.
This doesn't happen to me. My laptop boots up in seconds!
What's the name of this SSD? Also, when I got my SSD put in it was doing the same thing. I found out it was the system recovery 's amount of storage I allowed! It was constantly writing to the ssd. So I put it to 10gb and it's really fast.
When I started the system with the SSD alone it booted in 10 seconds. However, when I plug in the old HDD which contains a partition having the old Windows 8.1 OS, it takes 30s to boot - but it is booting from the SSD. Boot time is reduced to 15s if I enable fast start-up.
I tried changing the MSCONFIG start-up options which messed up something since the system then refused to boot from the SSD!
I've now restored the SSD again. I wonder whether the problem is due to still having the old OS on another partition (Drive G). Should I delete the old OS partitions or is some work needed using BCDEDIT to restore the boot up time?
I've hidden the previous OS partitions on the old HDD which is now a backup drive and disabled some unneeded startup programs and tasks using Autoruns.
The PC now boots to the Windows login screen in 15s (from BIOS beep to login) with fast start-up disabled and in 10s with fast start-up enabled.
Is this now a reasonable boot time for a system using a San Disk Pro SSD, Intel i5 4670K CPU, 8GB RAM & Gigabyte GA-Z87-HD3 Intel Z87 motherboard running Windows 8.1 Pro x64?
The boot time increased to 30s again for some reason. I then found disconnecting my external Seagate USB HDD reduced the boot time to 20s. I then discovered the partition on the external HDD was set to active for some reason. I've now set the external USB HDD partition to inactive and the PC boots to the login screen in 20s consistently. Why does having an active partition on the external USB HDD increase the boot delay so much?
I can't find any more unnecessary services to disable using Autoruns so maybe this is the best time I can achieve without enabling the fast start-up feature?
