SSD Performace with maximum space used..

Ok so I've read tons about not to fill up SSD's because it needs space atleast 10-20% free so it can shuffle around things and keep things speedy..

Well, what exactly happens when you do only have that 1GB or 200MB left on your SSD??

I think I have filled it to the max (a 250GB SSD) and then I deleted stuff because I got scared about that provisioning thing..etc..

My SSD's do not have over-provisioning.. i never did that..

So is that SSD that I filled up to the brim broken and will never achieve lightspeed again or what? I don't seem to notice any difference in it..

So Im screwed according to this? sheesh.. ha.

-The thing is, they don't give you a solution to when you do fill it to capacity.. they just tell you it sucks..

"If you fill a drive to capacity or near capacity, it’s likely that you’ll end up with many partially filled blocks after you delete files. The TRIM command just directs a solid-state drive to remove file data when the file is deleted. It doesn’t force the drive to do any sort of cleanup operation.
In other words, fill a solid-state drive to capacity before deleting files and you’ll likely end up with many partially filled blocks. The drive won’t go out of its way to consolidate these partially-filled blocks into full blocks, freeing up empty blocks. The drive will still be full of partially filled blocks and write performance will be degraded."

Consumer-grade solid-state drives often set aside about 7% of their total flash storage and make it unavailable to the user. Like this you questioned, not much leeway.

If have a lot of software should buy a bigger drive then 250GB solve that issue or buy another 250GB for extra storage.

Just bought this off amazon.. haha

Amazon.com: Seagate Expansion 5TB Desktop External Hard Drive USB 3.0 (STEB5000100): Computers & Accessories

Not big on Seagate, but that is a lot of space. Only thing is won't be running software off it, just probably files (documents,videos,pictures,music..etc..) As external drives are good for backup.

I don't think this is true of modern SSD, Garbage collections goes on when ever your notebook is Idle I think it will sort itself out eventually. Samsung and Intel have software programs to force Trim and rapidly sort out your SSD I don't know about other brands but I assume that they all have software tools that come with them you might have to go to the manufacture support website and download it.

Its really silly to fill one up like that even Hard drives can't work efficiently when you fill them up beyond 50% or so. I don't know what would happen to a full OS hard drive. That external drive you got should solve your problem get all your data files off that drive all you need on the SSD is the OS and program files

Check this out https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trim_(computing)

If you only have slots for 1 hard drive I suggest you spring for a 1 TB SSD that way you won't have to worry about it filling up.

I should probably let it be know that this was a NGFF slot m.2 250GB MydigitalSSD 42mm card that I filled up.. which is my secondary drive in the computer..

My primary (OS installed drive) Samsung 840 EVO has 120GB free of 232GB..

So I filled up the secondary one .. which does just hold apps/pictures/documents etc..

anyway thanks for all the replies..

I dont' think MydigitalSSD has a program to force Trim.. But I guess when I format the thing completely maybe it will trim all it needs to..

Well your best option would be to move your OS to the M2. SSD and replace the 120GB SSD with a large hard drive or Large SSD there available up to 1 TB now. But a good 7200 RPM hard drive is all that is needed for DATA Picture, Video's. Just incase you don't know That M2. SSD is about twice as fast as any SATA SSD. You want your speed to be for your OS, data files don't really need the extra speed. Unless you are loading huge Photoshop, Video or CAD files you'll never notice the difference.

Yes that little mini card 256GB runs off your PCIe probably 4 lanes, where your SATA SSD is limited by the SATA bus 500 Mbs. Our Asus G notebooks M2 runs about 1000 Mbs unless your M2. is running also on the SATA bus. You need to verify which you have but what would be the point of putting in a M2 is it would be limited by SATA wouldn't be logical and there expensive about 2x what a SATA SSD runs. and 256gb would not be sufficient for storage for just about anyone.

I'll run some benchmarking programs that I think will state otherwise your claims..

Or My m.2 slot is not PCIe.. could be that too..
