I received a message in Action Center re File History drive stating that I need to reconnect to this drive and says to "run now". I have no idea how it was disconnected and not knowing much about this type of stuff, will reconnecting this drive have any adverse effect on any other programs in Windows 8.1? I tried to find out what this entails on my own and didn't find any useful information.

Thank you.

Thank you.
Was you external HDD on at the time or the error warning? It could have been that maintenance wanted to run it's schedule and you didn't have the drive on, hence the message.

Hi Cliff, thanks for your reply. Well, I found out on File Explorer that it wants me to copy the files to my Toshiba external hard drive which I purchased a few weeks ago and not all that familiar with it and just haven't connected it to my computer since my son helped me to set it up. I'm still in the learning stage......and, it's going to take me awhile to learn! I have to contact my son so he can guide me. I'm sorry to have, yet again, posted something that didn't provide all the info and unnecessarily bothered you kind folks.

I do have another question, but it's going to be complete. Here it goes, re System Image. Does a System Image (not sure if that's the correct term) cover everything on the computer, or just certain programs, files, etc. And can it be done by using the external hard drive, etc. And, is there simple and clear instructions in this forum on how to do it? I already have the Recovery Media for Windows 8 on discs with the help of Eight Forums in 1/2014.....boy, was that fun.....NOT!

Thanks, again, Cliff, for your response.

Does a System Image (not sure if that's the correct term) cover everything on the computer, or just certain programs, files, etc. A
A system image is a bit for bit(0's and 1's) image of all partitions you have(one can choose which ones if one wants)

Full Image

A disk image creates an exact copy of the data on your hard disk. This includes the structure of the partitions on the disk and the file system format on the partition. A typical Macrium Reflect image file only includes the parts of the disk that are used by the file system, this is then compressed to reduce the image file size. An image using standard compression will be around 60-70% of the size of the used space of the imaged partition. A full image creates a new Image Set complete with a unique Image ID.

A good one I use is Macrium Reflect Free. To learn about images and how to create and re-image when needed, go to this link which is the Help link for Macrium.

Yes you should use an external disk for this, if for some reason over time your laptops hard disk fails, all you have to do is buy a new one and install it, then hook up your drive with the recovery image and plug in your bootable rescue media and re-image to the new drive. Just don't forget to create the WinPE rescue media:
Windows PE rescue media: This rescue environment is a Windows-based environment which injects the necessary drivers, Macrium Reflect components and tools to enable you to recover your system. Windows PE environments generally have better hardware support and allow you to perform functionality such as ReDeploying your system, fixing windows boot issues. There are two possible choices for PE environment which are summarised in the following table:
PE Version
Description
4.0
Created using the Windows ADK, this is a Windows 8 based PE environment with support for later hardware, UEFI boot and Secure Boot systems.
When you're ready for this there are people here ready to help if you need it.
Also see this tutorial for mor information about image creating.

I am about to reinstall windows 8.1 as it's been awhile since i've re-installed windows.. (just for cleaning purposes)

right after I install, should i use Macrium Reflect or just plain old Windows System Image..

I just want to be able to put my new windows install back to the start if I screw somethin up after I reinstall windows again..

Macrium is the better choice.

Ok i'll use macrium..

i just keep reading that Windows System Image does the same thing as Macrium - but you don't need to create the Restore USB..

I guess with Macruim you should create a restore USB to use..

Yup, but you can also use that USB on other computer to create an image too(offline of course) and it has BCDEdit boot repair(while testing Windows 10, then reimaging back to Windows ,7 I needed that once. You can also use it if something happens and surf in your images. It's a pretty powerful tool.

Thanks, again, Cliff for your help and posting links. After I read and, hopefully, understand how to do, I still may have to post some questions re this procedure.

Well, I have read all the articles in your post and I'm not understanding a lot of the procedures....there are lots of terms/program information used in these articles that I do not understand or how to proceed. I''m lost.......I'm afraid to even attempt to download the program because questions may be asked of some type of function I have no knowledge of during the download.....then what am I suppose to do. I wish I had a friend or someone in the family whose an expert about computer systems, programs, etc., etc., that could do the whole darn project for me. I do have a step-daughter who probably could help somewhat, but she works full-time and has 2 young daughters to take care of as well. And, my son could probably help out with some of it, but he also works (different shifts) and lots of overtime.

Cliff, I do appreciate and thank you for providing me with the information. When I'm feeling less stressed out, I'm going to give it another try.

No problem. If you want we can plan on a Sunday when you have time and not so stressed, and I can help get you started with it. Once it's set up with a definition file (what to backup, when/how often to backup, where to backup to) and you create the recovery disk, which works the same way as in Windows 7's backup, all you need to learn is how to recover.

You can either PM me or just post to this thread and next time I look in I'll see it as I'm subscribed to it.

For the mean time:
Here is a tutorial from our sister Seven Forums: Windows 7: Imaging with free Macrium
You can watch the video by Wolfgang to get an idea how it all works and looks being done.
