get file history to see more recent files on history drive

Actually I'm trying to do exactly what is proposed here, and file history is not behaving as expected. I restored a full image I took a few months ago, which worked great. When I tried to restore the intervening file history, though, it only sees the three month old restore point, and gives me no option to restore the more recent files I can see are on the history drive. I could move them by hand but they now have the dates appended to the file names, and it will be a huge task.

Any ideas to get file history to see the more recent files on the history drive?

When you restored File History lost the cross references for the newer "changes". You can only do it manually, All you have to do is go to the last known or good date in File History's files and use copy & replace. If you have 7Zip you can even set it up in dual panel to navigate easier.:

Thank you for your reply, Cliff S! I'm sure you are correct. It is unfortunate that File History isn't robust enough to check to storage location for newer files and make them available to recover. I can move by hand, as you said, but I have to go through large directory structures to do so, an the file history files have the date time stamp stuck in the file name.

Maybe you can explain some other interesting behavior I noticed today. I'm working on a temporary machine while my primary laptop recovers, and I notice that all of my library directories have replicated onto it, up through the date of my last file history backup! I logged in with my Microsoft account on the temp machine, and by so doing, something is syncing my library files to the machine. Is that a file library feature, some other win 8.1 feature, or something else, like maybe Dropbox? I feel silly not knowing how all my files, including 218gb of pictures, got onto this temp machine I logged onto. (Well not all, but up to 5/7.) It is helpful during a restore, but I have to wonder what other machines I've unknowingly left copies of my personal documents on!

Thanks again for your help!

Have you connected this temp machine to the file history drive and clicked restore, by any chance. You say it's your libraries, and that's the only thing I can think of. To me it looks like the action that OneDrive does when sync'd across different computers, to the same MS account. Maybe someone else has seen this.

On my desktop,I keep my libraries(except downloads and desktop) on a on a partition on the second internal drive, so when I re-image or if I had to re-install(to date not yet) my libraries are preserved as they were.

On my laptop, same thing using a partition, on a n USB 3.0 external HDD.

Thanks again for your reply and your help. No, although I did connect the File History drive, I never hit Restore, or even opened File History on the temp machine. Also, there are files on the temp machine that the File History restore (on the recovered machine) doesn't even see.

Thanks for your recommendations, I will definitely be changing my library strategy after this. I've just been stunned to find so many personal files loaded onto this temp machine and I have no solid idea how they got there.
