My computer is not creating restore points automatically

I have a similar problem. My computer is not creating restore points automatically (as I set in the Task Scheduler) and is not keeping more than two or three restore points

System restore points are created when a program installation calls for it (but not every program installation). I can also manually create restore points. An automatic restore point is apparently created every week. However, older restore points are not retained (yes, I have plenty of space allocated to system restore and the two restore points kept use only a small fraction of the available space.

I tried using the task scheduler to create a daily restore point, just so I can see what is going one. Task Scheduler tells me that these tasks finished successfully but do not show up in the list of restore points in System Restore or CC Cleaner.

An example: if I have my Norton Utilities 16 run its defragger, it removes all my SRPs.
I'm wondering if a PC-slimmer, or PC-make-faster, something has default of deleting SRPs as part of its trimming routine. I'm a Windows 7 user, so I'm only guessing: something could be turning off SRP creation.

Addendum: I forgot to add that I no longer use NU16's defragger.

Personally I would not use anything but the built-in Windows Defrag Tool. I figure the built-in tool would be best to know how to handle the Restore Point data, after all, it's part of the same OS. But that's just my opinion. From my experience, auto creation is kind of hit or miss. On my systems it seems a restore point is created automatically when an update marked as Critical is installed and if I do not create one manually after about a week it seems one will be created automatically. I am fairly aggressive with restore points and generally create one manually at least every other day and even daily depending on if I have been installing or uninstalling anything. I always create a restore point before windows updates. I also find that on both my PC's restore points older than 2 weeks will automatically be deleted. The whole thing is controlled by VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) and the creation and/or deletion of older shadow copies. Beyond me.

In general, restore points are not really the best method of backup even though I have always had good success with the restore operation. My primary backup method is full system imaging to an external HDD using Macrium Reflect. I also make a Custom Refresh Image about once a month

Don't use a third party defragger

Thanks for your responses. I don't use any third-party defragger, I use CCleaner to remove junk files and occasionally use Slim Cleaner for the same purpose. I'll hold off using them for a while to see if that makes a difference.

I use Acronis Backup on a regular basis--backing up to my network drive--but have always relied on System Restore to get me out of trouble after I do something that messes up my system.
