didnt really know where to post this, but here goes.

ive been messing around with my hd today, and ive ended up with 3 partitions. first one in the row is a 1gig partition which might aswell be unallocated, cant really do much with it. then i have the system partition, which you can do nothing to, ive tried third party software, but gotten nowhere. then third and last, i have the primary partition, which i would like the first partition be merged with (the 1 gig unallocated space).

looks like this:
1 gig unallocated space- system part - primary part.

would like it to look like this:
system part - primary part.

maybe one of you folk know of a way to accomplish this ? any help appreciated.

System One

  • OS
    Windows 8.1
    Computer type
    Laptop
Download: Free Partition Manager for Window PC | MiniTool Partition Wizard Free Edition
Use: Rufus - Create bootable USB
Then boot up the PC with USB. Right click on the 2nd partition->Move Partition then drag it to the left.
Do the same for 3rd partition and drag to the left. Click Apply on the top left to commit the change.
You'd end up with the 1st partition: System
2nd: Prinmary and 1GB unallocated at the end.
Boot up into Windows: Win+X->Disk Management then right click on the Primary->Extend Partition.

You cannot change the system partition while Windows is running (kind of logical, otherwise what would happen if you e.g. deleted the partition). Make an image of your system drive (whole drive including boot sector and everthing else on to that drive), then download the Gparted live image from here, burn it on a cd and boot from that disc. Now you can change any partition you'd like.

"turn the key" said Pandora's box.....

I would not mess with the partitions if they are not causing you any issues, especially with Windows 8.

Windows 7 and previous is not a problem since you can repair the boot structure with a Win7 Boot repair CD

Windows 8 repair cd seems to not always work and is tempermental...

Adding partitions at the end is ok, and safe... but changing, adding, or deleting partitions before your system or OS partition can cause your system not to boot.

Please take all precautions before you attempt this such as backing up important data, making a recovery cd, and take a physical picture of your partition layout and order...

Saving 1GB of space is nowhere near worth the hassle that will come...

When bootup from USB. You should get a screen as shown below and no installation needed:

just curious, Bonnerik, is your system still booting ok, or did you have to run a boot repair cd?

May be I can explain to you. This should not effect anything since these unallocated partitions are not seen by Windows (No volume assigned, just unallocated) and he should not have to do any boot repair.

Here's an example:
p.png
As long as you move the unallocated partition around, the rest of the partitions will be unchanged. If you create a partition from the unallocated partition then all partitions # to the right will be shifted by one ie. 2 becomes 3, 3 becomes 4 then you'll have the problem.
