Hi ,

I've just installed a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 and it takes a lot of time to restart/shutdown (about 5-6 min ).
Even boot times are not as fast as they should be on a new install .. (boot takes about a minute )

Can anyone help me to find out what is it that is causing the slow shutdown/restart ? :(

My first guess would be Norton 360 as the cause.

Try those settings as well:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"AutoEndTasks"="1"
"HungAppTimeout"="1000"
"WaitToKillAppTimeout"="1000"
"WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="1000"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control]
"WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="1000"

Hi,

I cannot find these keys in Regedit under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop .. Any idea why?

Also , any app that would log the shutdown and restart activities to know what Windows is actually doing while it is taking so much time?

Could this be a driver issue ? You say its a fresh install, does that include all Windows updates and offered drivers.

You could try just installing 8.1 and NOT going on line and seeing how startup and shut down behave with default drivers.

No wonder, it takes so long to shutdown. Download this reg file, run, allow add to registry, restart.
Also , any app that would log the shutdown and restart activities to know what Windows is actually doing while it is taking so much time?
Right click Start - Event Viewer - look at shutdown time and search, which app was terminated or such.
