Windows Explorer slow

I have recently acquired a new laptop Alienware R14 R2 with stock Windows 8. After installation there was all OK, but after updates and a few days Explorer is sluggish. When selecting a file to copy hourglass comes up, rather often this is happening. I need to wait a while to proceed, like 5 seconds at times. I am sure the performance generally is bad, though with the Explorer it's easy to see. Stock Windows is 8, after the updates it's now 8.1. Thinking an update screwed it up, either Windows or Nvidia but have no way of knowing how to fix it.:mad:

Does it have HDD or SSD for a drive. If HDD try totaling defragging it. Here is a command line tool I made that also defragements the empty space on the drive to make room for when installing programs that they won't be installed fragmented and another part activates windows boot time optimization(arranges required boot files & programs to beginning of disk). Also see this thread.
The batch file comes with instructions and a shortcut set to run as Administrator. Just edit the drive letters in the batch file to whatever thy are on your computer.

I have an SSD. It's a fast laptop running most games. I never had this problem before. Sometimes, when I right click a file the computer becomes unresponsive and the screen goes blank for a while. It's the right-click command in Explorer that causes problems. I don't see problems with anything else

Are you using a wireless mouse with it or the touchpad. look in device manager and see if any of the drivers are having any problems. You can also generate a health report like the one in Windows 7 by following the instructions in my signature and see if it brings up any red flags on hardware or software. You might have to try a couple of times(sometimes temporarily blocked by system) or go here to do it the "hard way"

Touch pad is disabled, the mouse is logitech wired. I did the report via the link you provided. No red flags.Otherwise I don't know how to read and compare the data from this.
I can't see which test you mean in your sig.

I got these two errors in systems diagnostics. The Device Manager list the devise as unknown (within Other Devices) so I can't unable it.
Device is disabled.
Cause: A device is disabled preventing it from working properly.
Details: The device, #UNKNOWN#, is disabled. If this device is no longer used it may be intentionally disabled. The Plug and Play ID for this device is ACPI\CPL0002\2-DABA3FF-2.
Resolution: 1. Determine if you need the device.
2. If you need the device, enable it in Device Manager.
3. If you do not use the device it can be left disabled.

For this ACPI\CPL0002\2-DABA3FF-2 see this at Alienware club. And the other on has to do with Bluettooth being disabled which is nothing to worry about if you disabled it or else go to Devices & Printers and turn it back on or try the troubleshooter.

Thanks, the link helped to fix the driver (for the record) It has nothing to do with the erratic system performance. I'll put Windows 7 on it.
