5,000+ 'Administrative Events' found!--what's the cause?

Hi Everyone!
I know you'll figure this out by my questions, I'm not what you'd call technically inclined. Despite using a PC daily since 1999, I only know the basics, like email, browsing, streaming media, games, etc. I've always kept everything up-to-date, I run Malwarebytes, CCleaner & my AV program weekly, defrag occasionally & I never visit any questionable sites, nor do I open attachments in emails unless I know the sender. So I guess you can say I'm a cautious, semi-experienced home user with game-playing addiction who knows absolutely nothing about how a PC works. I AM, however, very bright & I can follow detailed instructions, so I know I can do whatever anyone who IS technically-inclined advises me to do, so if you give me instructions, I know I'll finish the task successfully. How's that for a disclaimer! ;)

I'm running Windows 8.1 on a Lenovo G585 & I've been having noticeable problems related to viewing streaming media, (I view bald eagle nest cams & keep detailed records for research), & I was told that my router, (a 5 yr. old Belkin 802.11 G), was too old & slow to handle the speed necessary for what I'm doing, especially since I have a broadband connection. I followed their suggestion because it made sense, & I bought & installed a Linksys E2500 'N' Dual Band router & I expected the video streaming to at least triple, (because that's what everyone told me would happen). That was a month ago, & things have deteriorated to the point where if I have Firefox open with a nest cam site on, I can't play a game, get email, go to another website, or anything else for that matter.

I called Linksys support yesterday & the tech did that "remote exam" where they take control of a PC & check wherever their product's info & activity is & troubleshoot. Well, he made a minor adjustment by changing the Channel the router was using, then he went to 'Computer Management'>System Tools>Event Viewer>Custom Views>Administrative Events. First, a "Query Error" popped up, saying that one or more logs has a query, (whatever that means), & that the 'system cannot find the file specified'. Then he clicked OK, & the console window filled up with 'Warnings' & 'Errors' that began on 12/19/13, (only a few at first, but they increased in great numbers about 6 weeks ago). When it finished populating, the grand total of 'Administrative Events' was 5,170!!! Well, the 'Events' are still going on, because I just opened the computer management console & the total has risen to 5,199! The only advice the Linksys tech kept repeating was that I "need to optimize my PC", then he quickly told me all about their 3rd Party Partner, Computrix, & that "they'll, (Computrix), have everything running smoothly & faster than ever in about 20 minutes for ONLY $79.99"! Well, I smelled something fishy, plus I just don't have that kind of money to throw around, so I thanked him for his help, (amid his repetition about Computrix), because I wanted to check on the reputation of Computrix, & see if this was something I could fix on my own...with help from PC-smart people, that is! I didn't like most of what I found about this company, plus I already knew from past experience, that most PC problems can be fixed by 'normal' people, if they get the right instructions from people who know about the problem because I've done it many times before.

What's baffling to me is that I NEVER got any notification about these events, so this has been doing on for over 1 year, maybe longer, completely unchecked. Why wouldn't I have gotten some sort of notification, like a message box, a message in the Activity Center, an email...something should've told me there was a problem but they didn't, so I wasn't, so I'm in what looks like a big heap of trouble! I hope that someone can help me figure this out, (I'm praying that it won't involve re-installing the OS...been there, done that...twice...many years ago with XP, & I didn't enjoy it one bit! Here's a little info that I think might be helpful, but since I've never had this happen, you might need other info...just let me know, & if I know how to find it I'll post it.

In scrolling over the ever-growing list of errors, & while I didn't read many of them, (& I don't understand much of what the computer-ese means), I noticed that a lot of them were categorized as; "Kernel-Event Tracing", then many are "Application", (some that I read were related to Adobe Flash), "Windows Update", "Schannel", "DistributedCOM", "DNS Client Events", "ESENT" & others, Even I know that there has to be a reason that these 'Events' are happening, so I'm guessing some settings are wrong or maybe updates are needed, (like drivers or BIOS), but as far as Windows Updates, AV Program, Flash & anything I know to take care of, well, I have everything set on Automatic Update & the others I have set to notify me when updates are available. I still can't understand why I never knew about all this, especially since I'm the ONLY one who uses this PC, (my hubby only likes power tools!), & I'm the Administrator. If these are Administrative Events, why wasn't I alerted about this?

I know there IS a problem somewhere, but before I use money that I don't have to begin with, is this something I can fix myself, or is it something that only a real technician can fix? I AM a quick-learn, so if there's a way to fix it myself, please post the detailed instructions, & I'll post the results.
Please let me know what all this means, & if there's any more info needed, just tell me.
Thank you all so much for reading my post. I'm very grateful for your help, & as you can see, I need all the help I can get!

Many Thanks,
DogPal

Thanks for your response, David!

Well, you're proving my lack of tech knowledge right off the bat! I don't understand your suggestion or the abbreviations, & when I clicked on the link you provided, I was even more confused.
Would you mind explaining what you mean, (especially what the abbreviations mean), so I can give it a try?

Sorry to be a bother, but PC lingo is something I'm not familiar with.

Thanks!

My 2c is to suggest you forget about the event log. It is completely normal to have hundreds or thousands of messages and it generally isn't worth looking at it at all unless you have a specific problem. If something crashes you can look at the log for when it happened and google the error message in case this gives a clue but it is a waste of time analysing them all. These logging messages never pop-up and tell you and most of the "errors" do not impact on the system running at all.

The guy was just trying to scare you into paying $80 for (at best) a pointless tool that didn't make anything worse. Don't even consider it.

dism and sfc are built-in windows utilities to check the integrity of Windows operating system files. It is a good idea to download and run the program (dism.bat) David linked to in post #2 to rule that out as a cause of your issues. Post back if you get stuck on any of the steps but they should be fairly clear.

You then need focus on your problem, namely why Firefox is using all your resources when looking at your nest cam - not random messages in the log. Run the dism.bat script first though. Good luck.

Hi Again!
Well, I ran dism as suggested, & as you probably already know, I don't know what the results mean. (You're allowed to laugh, because, I am, but mine's that crazy person's laugh that happens when someone's at the end of their rope & considering to jump off a building....just kidding!) ;)

I saved everything to my desktop for quick access, so may I post the results here so someone who knows what these things mean can translate for me? If not, what do you suggest I do next?

Thanks so much for your help!

Hi Adam!
Glad you're still here! I apologize for being pushy, but may I PM the results to you? I don't mind waiting till tomorrow for your directions.
If they would be helpful to others, then I'll post here. I always worry about security, as I've had my identity stolen twice, so I'm very cautious.
Anyway, let me know if you can.
Thanks again!

The only information you should post should be this screen like this generated from the program in Davids link. It definitely doesn't contain any personal information. If you prefer though you can PM it, sure.

Hi Adam!
Sorry for the delay, but I had to figure out how to convert the file from a .rtf to .txt; so here it is. I think it's the one you need, but if it''s not, I also saved the CBS.log, as well as the longer dism.log, in case you need one of them.

I looked at all of them & I didn't understand anything, except that "there were some errors that couldn't be fixed". This is the 1st time I ever ran this scan in almost 20 years of using a PC...sad, isn't it. Oh, well, I made a vow many years ago to learn something new every day, so this has been a great learning experience for me!

If you need anything else, let me know.

Thanks again for your help! :thumb:

The mot interesting thing in your log is this:

Code:

Version: 6.3.9600.17031

The restore operation failed. Either the repair source was not found or the comp
onent store cannot be repaired.

Error: 0x800f081f

DISM failed. No operation was performed.

I'm not sure if the script running without rebooting between steps could be an issue. Please try to reboot and run the script again. Make sure you are connected to the internet also - just open a web page first to check.

If it fails (and the results look the same) please post the logs.

Hi Adam!
I rebooted & ran dism again. Since I'm not familiar with this scan, I don't know how to tell if it's completed running, as at the bottom it ends with:
"[========= 20.0% ]"
Since the cursor was still flashing, I didn't close it, in case it wasn't finished, but I'll attach what info is there so far.
I'll wait to read your post before I attach the logs from the CBS & dism logs, just in case there's more info still being gathered by the scan.
Thanks again for sticking with me on this. I'm very grateful for all your help.

Hi Again, Adam!
Well, I just took a peek at the scan window, & it's still scanning...it's a good thing I didn't close it before,huh?!
I guess you should just ignore the attachment I sent earlier. I'll wait an hour or two, then I'll post everything you mentioned earlier.
Thanks again!
