I have a Sony Vaio SVS 151 with 12gb of ram running Windows 8.1. The disk usage runs at 100% almost all the time, and as long as the disk usage is high the laptop is almost unusable it runs so slow. Most of the time it is Service Host: Local Service. I have read other threads and none of the suggestions have corrected this problem.

Without knowing what suggestions you have already tried it will be difficult to offer any additional suggestions.

From other threads I have tried, increasing my virtual disk space, disabling my dvd drive, reinstalling my bios with the latest upgrade, upgrading device drivers.

Are all Windows Updates installed and up to date?
In an elevated command prompt type sfc /scannow. Does it fix all corrupt system files. If not all fixed type:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Then run the sfc command again, reboot. Is there any change.

If not, you may have to Refresh your Windows.

I second the above.

If sfc /scannow does not complete without violations you should restart and repeat the operation a second time. After you run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth it should complete with message all corruptions/violations repaired, then run sfc /scannow again. Sometimes it may take running these commands a couple of times attempting to correct whatever issues that may be present.

Thanks, I ran both of those commands and they completed successfully, however the problem still exists. When I researched refreshing windows it says I need the recovery disk that came with the computer, is there a way I can perform the refresh task without the disk, which I can't locate?

Refresh, Option 2 from here:

Not knowing what computer you have, you could use either the recovery partition or recovery disks for your computer.

You could download and burn a Windows 8.1 from here, be sure to have your Key.

As a last ditch effort before Refreshing may I suggest a few things.

Check amt. of disk fragmentation, defrag if necessary.

Manually trigger Start Maintenance in Action Center and let run till complete

Run @ Adm. Cmd Prompt Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

Any one of these things may or may not help but they sure won't hurt anything and it just might improve the situation.

Ok friend, instead of trying these random copy+paste command which really wouldn't effect such a problem in the first place, let's actually get to the bottom of just what is going wrong, and fix that. No refresh needed... hopefully.

Download Process Hacker 2: http://processhacker.googlecode.com/files/processhacker-2.33-setup.exe

Install it, launch it as administrator. To be sure its running fully elevated, focus the window and go to File -> Show All Processes.

If the show all processes isn't there, its fully elevated.

Now switch to the Disk tab and re-sort everything by maximum read or write the same way you would re-sort a list of files alphabetically.

You should hopefully see the offending process. Double click the process and switch to the threads tab.

Look for a thread that has a really high number next to it, and post the name here. Along with the process name, and if possible a screenshot of the ProcessHacker window.

If nothing showed up in the Disk tab or you couldn't get as far as I said above. Let me know, we'll try something else.

If I don't come back for whatever reason, go ahead and attempt to terminate that thread, and if your computer doesn't BSoD (should be safe if you close all work and save anything before attempting to terminate it) than you know what exactly you should uninstall/delete to free yourself from the problem.

Be warned though, process hacker 2 is a powerful tool, and its misuse can lead to needing to reinstall windows. So do be careful what you click on. It has addition confirmations in place, so be sure to read them before hitting OK.

System (4), C:\Windows\System32\sru\SRUDB.dat, , 873.67 kB/s, 873.67 kB/s, Normal, 2

when I double click it opens folder view and I don't see a thread tab
