Hello,

Whenever I am playing a video, game, or music it will stutter/freeze for a fraction of a second. This occurs about once every 2 minutes. It also creates a harsh noise when it does this. Afterwards, everything continues as normal. What could cause this/fix this issue?

I am currently using windows 8.1 using an Inspiron 7720, Intel Core i7-3630QM CPU, 8gb ram, with a Samsung Evo 840 SSD.

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

Most likely some malfunctioning/obsolete driver. Check your power options too, something might want to go to sleep at the time and has to be "waken up".

I have the exact same problem. My system is a Dell 7720 (Dell Inspiron 17r SE). I had the impression the issue manifested after updating the geforce drivers but a clean install (the nvidia installer has the "clean install" option) of the ones available on the manufacturer (dell) site didn't solve the problem.

A couple of weeks ago I played a recent AAA game and had to overclock my video card. The system wasn't very stable and it would reboot from time to time. The gpu stayed overclocked for several hours across a few days. I fear I damaged my hardware somehow.

I already re-installed the audio card drivers too (but it wasn't a clean install).

PLEASE HELP!!!

I found a solution that works for me:

Control Panel -> Device Manager -> System Devices -> Right Click on [Dell Diag Control Device] -> Disable

In my case the drivers for that device updated automatically and since then I started experiencing the problem. I'm not sure if Dell is going to fix this, in the meanwhile disabling it should fix the stuttering.

Hope that helps

Thank you very much! This seems to have worked. How did you discover this solution because in Device Manager it said the Device was Working Properly. However, after you mentioned this, I googled the device and found this post: A major bug in the latest SupportAssist / Dell Diag Control Device - Microsoft OS Forum - Software & Operating Systems - Dell Community .

Thanks again! Hopefully Dell fixes this problem and also that this solution continues to work and something else doesn't crop up. I thought something in my computer was starting to fail. You saved me a lot of headaches!

I'm glad it worked for you too. I watch a lot of movies with my laptop and the stuttering was really annoying! Let's hope Dell fixes the driver soon. To be honest I don't know what the device is for but I suppose it has some use! ;)

I've experienced that stuttering too and it disappeared when I set power plans (Power Options in Control Panel) to "Peformance". The default plan is "Balanced". Try setting it to "Performance" and see whether the stuttering will go away.
