Solved Help needed Defrag Dual Boot System

I have a dual boot system Windows 8.1 that came preinstalled and Windows 7 where I do all my work.
Lately my computer started to slow down slightly especially at start. I checked System Configuration startup and found only five applications that is needed like sound...... I thought I would buy a HD defrag application and use it from now on. I am not a computer expert like most of the people here so I thought I should seek an expert advice on whether is it safe to use these application or the chance is there that they could ruin my system, especially if I run boot time defrag.

I will appreciate any advice in this.

Windows 8.1 own Optimize Drives and windows 7 Defragmenter are enough. The can be set to a certain time or manually activated. A lot of the 3rd party defragmenters do not use Windows APIs and are not VSS aware and can mess up restore points and copies of files, The 3rd party software developers say theirs defrags even more because windows own performs a partial defragmentation by consolidating only file fragments that are less than 64MB in size, but there isn't any proof any where that defragging beyond this gives any performance increase, if anything it wears out the disk faster. So I recommend sticking with windows own, and saving your money and disk.

Some Command Line(Admin.) commands to get the best out of Windows defragmenter:

Windows Boot Optimization
Code:
defrag c: /b /v /u

Windows Space Consolidation
Code:
defrag c: /x /v /u

  1. c: is the system drive(you can change it to any drive/partition letter you need/want.
  2. /b is for boot defrag and arranges you files need for booting windows.
  3. /x is for empty space consolidation so reducing further fragmentation of files and programs by giving them more free space to grow/write
  4. /u lets you see the progress in the command prompt
  5. /v is for the statistics

Thank you for your advise, I will also try your suggested programs, if Cliff's solution did not improve the performance because I really need to speedup my boot time and program access time.

Appreciate your taking the time to help me.

@ dabour,
I made you a zip file containing a batch file that uses the commands I wrote about above, but they do it one after the when you double click the shortcut(Note: it can take awhile).
Just extract it to Documents, move the shortcut to desktop if you wish. The instructions shows you how to add drives and/or partitions. After adding them just save the batch file again.

Cliff S,

Once more Thank you for your time, I appreciate that very much. I used the two commands you wrote earlier and the change that I can comfortably say it happened is the access time for the applications. Booting the computer still needs around five minutes to reach the desktop only. I will try the batch file you kindly sent and let you know.

Cliff S,

Hope you will excuse me for being absent this time, we had some unplanned work to deal with that prevented me from trying the file you kindly gave me. Now I run the file and the result was good, from previous experience with defrag application I could say it gave better results, while accessing my applications and files, on the other hand running the .bat file gives error (0x8900001A) which is explained as "boot optimization must be run on the boot volume", and I do not know how to do this, because I do not have a special boot volume, or at least I can not find it in Windows Disk Management.

I did a run on drive c: with the bat file, it chopped off a few seconds from the boot time and improved the applications access time installed on it. I think this is the best that I could get out of a two years old machine.
I am glad that I learned something new out of this and I am much obliged for you Cliff S for your generous assistant and bearing with me, thank you very much.

You're welcome.

Laptop hard drives are usually slower(5400rpm) to save battery power, but with constant use windows uses superfetch and prefetch to speed things up.
The best upgrade of course is a Solid State Drive(SSD) even a cheap one is better than a Laptop HDD. My ASUS X54C with Windows 7 is 4 years old but after upgrading to 8GB RAM and an SSD, it still boots as fast as my Windows 8.1 tower.

Thanks again Cliff S for the help you kindly gave me. I always read that SSDs are much faster than the mechanical HDD, though there is always a clear warning that they are not safe yet to store valuable information and if one uses them one should keep an updated backup of the entire system all the time. That does not mean that mechanical HDD are 100% safe but the chances of their failure are rather slim. Speed is sometimes important for someone like me for using applications such as Autcad, but still I am very reluctant to take the move to SSD because I can not grantee that I will be able to keep an updated backup copy all the time.

"Rather slim" ? I have few pounds of magnets taken out from dead HDDs, I must have replaced (for others) hundreds of dead HDDs. all those electrical-mechanical parts and magnetic media have no chance of lasting as long as transistors in an SSD. First ones were maybe bad but newer ones are more likely to outlast any mechanical ones.

I use both SSD for system and programs & HDD for data(backups, files, music, videos..etc. My laptop has an 120GB SSD with a USB 3.0 external HDD. And my desktop one can see in specs. And what Mike said:

Only issue is the price, otherwise all my disks would be SSDs. There's already a lot of them in 1TB category to make it worthwhile. As far as space is concerned you can stick half a dozen SSD in place of one 3 1/2 HDDs. They use much less power an stay cool, perfect for short and long term storage. Coupled by USB3 or eSATA they would be most portable and just as fast as being inside. Biggest enemy of portable HDDs is possibility of them being damaged in transport or jarred during work and all that is eliminated by using SSDs for that. So all of that makes them much better for everything than mechanical ones.
