Solved Image or Clone with Macrium?

I have created an image of my desktop W8.1 and the small partition before it with Macrium Reflect Free Edition. I have decided that instead of using the current 2.5" older SATA II SSD that I was going to use an mSATA (SATA III) as my boot drive. After the creation of the desktop image I noticed the image file is ~33gb which would work perfect on the 120gb mSATA. I am not sure if it would be possible to use an image vs cloning on a new mSATA? I am also sure the cloning would not work as the mSATA is a 128gb vs the 160 of the current SSD.

I hope this is possible as I am a student and going through a reinstall of W8.1, windows updates, and the programs I use will just do me in! Any suggestions? TIA.

you will restore the old image to the new SSD

You should only consider the ORIGINAL size of the drive, or partition, the image was made from. The drive that takes that image must be equal to or bigger than the original drive the image came off. Ignore the compressed size of an image when deciding if an image will fit; only the original drive size matters. Even though Macrium doesn't copy the empty sectors in an intelligently-copied image, it still indexes the total number of sectors and data position in those sectors.

One thing I forgot to mention was that I had created a partition of 80gb for W8.1 and the rest of the 160gb SSD was unused. Would that change things?

If I'm understanding correctly, you want to put an image from a 160gb drive onto a 128gb drive ...no you can't. Have you got about 50gb of actual data on that compressed 33gb image?

Edit: just reread your post. That is a 33gb image from an 80gb partition? Yes it will fit ...you just need to expand the image into the 128gb drive because it's 48gb bigger. There should be a prompt to do so, if you want to, when you put the image on the new drive. Make sure your drive letters match. C to C, D to D etc. You can'tput an image called C onto drive called F, for example.

@stringjunky. Yes I had created an 80gb partition from the 160gb SSD to install W8.1 on. Past experience is that I avg. ~50gb for W8.1 and the programs I use hence the 80gb partition. I keep all my storage (music, movies, games, pictures, school files) elsewhere. The 33gb is in unexpanded Macrium image file format. On the desktop I have an actual uncompressed value ~50gb out of 80gb. I have no plans to install any other software so I think the 80gb partition works well enough for my uses.

Yes,. My C is only 50GB. The only thing I'm not sure about is if you need to make a small partition the same size as the original like in your image before your C: drive. I've always done them separately myself, not that that is the only way to do it.

@stringjunky. Looks like we'll find out when I receive my mSATA later on this week. I will definitely come back and update my results. Thanks for your input.

@KYHI. This is my very first time using any type of imaging/cloning software so all advice and/or suggestions are well appreciated. Thanks for your input!

I make my images of all local drives on a 32 GB USB drive formatted as NTFS.
Using high compression 50 GBs shrinks to about 20 GBs.

I end up with 1 big image file instead of a bunch of 4 GB files that Fat 32 format would produce.

@all who replied.

Well I am typing from the restored image that I had saved. First I disconnected the two leads from my old SATA II SSD and set them aside. I then put the mSATA and adapter together and used the two leads (power and data ribbon/cables?) that had been previously connected to the old SSD. The mSATA adapter was a bit tight and putting the mSATA in was a bit nerve wracking!

Either that or I was just being overtly dramatic XD

I then plugged in my USB DVD drive as well as the external USB HDD that contained the Macrium Image file I wanted to use. Booted it up and inserted the Macrium Recovery Boot disk into the USB DVD drive. I restarted and pressed F11 (brings up the boot menu on my MSI motherboard), selected the USB DVD drive to boot, and the Macrium bootable environment was loaded.

I chose the two partitions I wanted to restore to the mSATA. Note: the program did not ask where I wanted to restore the image to at this point which made me a little nervous. I then clicked on 'Next' and finally there was an indicator asking where the target drive is located. After selecting the mSATA as the target drive I also chose to have the images verified and also to proceed with the restore. Away it went! So it took ~52 minutes according to a dialog window that popped up after the restore was finished. It definitely would have been faster if I did not select 'verify' but I thought I would just be cautious.

Anyhoo. Thanks all. I am pleased as punch! Cheers!

I verify after the image is made.

That way the restore takes about 25 minutes for me.

I'm glad it worked out for you. Once you understand Macrium it's 99.9% reliable ...it's cocked up once in five years for me and even then, I suspect, it was my fault.
