I have just made quite a few system changes, (been messing around a little bit, trying to improve performance/efficiency)..
1. I tried out RAM Disk and made a temporary Partition for Chrome, I have now uninstalled it and removed the partition since I found it unsatisfactory.. (It is extremely likely this was the cause)
2. I have brought an SD card for my computer I intend to have it permanently inserted in the SD slot of my computer, it is currently holding "Documents" folder on the computer successfully.
3. The thing is I did these two events at near the same time so it was difficult to distinguish what had changed what.
Now the problem is my boot time seems to have significantly increased, I am used to seeing blazing fast boot times due to my SSD, but this is not the case recently. The time it takes to shutdown and to start back up again is the same as the time it takes to restart, therefore my first assumption was that the Page file was not being written at shutdown. Upon further investigation this is the case.
Things I have noticed:
- Shutdown time is quicker, however when powering on again it is really long up to x5 times longer.
- The Page file doesnt seem to be writing much data during use, only a couple of 100mb (2% of its max capacity) I can see this due to a Windows Gadget I have.
- The Paged Pool and Non Paged pool sizes seem to be different in task manager (they dont look familiar), most of the numbers in the memory section seem unfamiliar. I dont usually pay attention to these things and mainly focus on the important stuff.
- I checked that FastStartup is enabled it is.
- Upon shutting down and powering on, I noticed that the CPU On time gets refreshed, (this was never the case) indicating it made no attempt to load the pagefile.
- The available memory (Physical) seems to be the same as cached memory?
- The hibernation feature functions as expected, saving the pagefile to memory and then loading it back up on startup, however I dont like this feature as it retains all the open apps etc. Whereas straight up shutting it down and powering on, ensures a blazing fast boot time <5s and the system is cleaned from any junk from a previous session.
My theory is that the Ram Disk had forced the PageFile, Hibernation File? settings to change and upon uninstalling they had not been reverted. It could also have changed more settings which I am not aware of. My first instinct was to perform a system restore but, there seems to have been a major problem in creating restore points (therefore I had none), I will be looking into this later. I am not particularly educated in this field, (I dont know a great deal about how PageFile, Hibernation Files, Page Pools, Cache etc work), looking around the system the settings seem to be everywhere and I just dont know what to do.
