Gaming on 8.1 slowing over time

I’ve had this issue since installing Windows 8. After initially installing the OS everything runs great but over time (in months) games become extremely sluggish. For example where I might get silky smooth 120fps on day1, on day 110 I’ll get a 12fps slideshow. I don’t notice any performance issues anywhere else – either it’s only affecting games or simply isn’t noticeable elsewhere.
I could really use some help diagnosing this. I’ve asked in various places before and I’ve got nowhere with it – the only solution has been to perform a clean install of Windows which is a massive pain.

Some things I’ve tried before that haven’t worked:
Checked for viruses
Checked temps & Overclocks
Reseated CPU / GPU
Updated Windows & Drivers
Checked background programs
System Restore
Windows Refresh

System Information:
CPU: 2500k @ 4.8Ghz
GPU: GTX 670
Mobo: Asrock z68 extreme 4
OS Drive: Samsung 840 Pro (256GB)
Other Drives: 120GB OCZ Agility 3, 1TB Seagate Barracuda, 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3

so you lost 12 frames per second? what?

what is the problem.. and how slow does your game eventually get??

you will never be able to hold the exact same framerate in anygame? the game environment changes of course.. what game are you playing?

and i think you already know this.. but this is to remind you that maybe.. just maybe you might have "unrealistic" expectations or too high standards for games today..

having said that.. not very nice programming and coding is always most always the issue.. what game is it? and are you getting these loss of "frames per second" when you run gaming benchmark programs??

also start going to ROG gamers web forum and start looking at what those crazy freaks are getting for results and compare..

I mean I've gone from 120fps in a game when the windows install was fresh to 12 fps in the same game a few months down the line.

that can't be.. so you can get 120 frames per second jan 5th.. and then feb 5th or so you start the game up and all the sudden you get 12 fps..

yeah.. and what you are not saying is what you installed and tweaked and changed in between..

if your computer is dropping like that.. then you have a major over-heating or power supply or serious hardware faultiness..

but i think you are tweaking or changing/installing things..

Does not happen here on Windows 8.1. After a year same game performance as when new. I use a gaming type 3D graphics benchmark to test and recorded the result a year ago so I can be definite about this.

I find your expression very unspecific, like 'reseating CPU/GPU' what exactly do you mean - do you mean removing the heat sink and re-applying thermal contact materials, or what exactly.

Same with Temps/overclocks what exactly did you do and the results. People can make a mess if they don't know what they are doing.

Intel processors when abused will clock down so they don't blow up.

come on helmut! you say you have the same performance of your computer like you did a year ago.. well that sounds cool and i thought to myself, "well, i wonder what system he has?"
.
and then i can't even see what system you have because you didn't post your system specs!!
