Dell Laptop Overclockable?

I have a question to ask. My laptop is clocked at 1.7GHz. Which is .30 GHz below normal laptop clock level. I heard that you can clock my processor (AMD A8-5545M) up to 2.7GHz. This is also a Laptop only processor. I have a Dell Inspiron M731R and was wondering if I could overclock it to anything above 2.1GHz without having to use an extrernal fan or cooling pad to prevent or slow down overheating. My laptop is slow and I want to have faster gameplay. I have a 17.3" display and I really wanna overclock it. WITHOUT 3RD PARTY SOFTWARE! Please! And if I can but can't without overheating, is there a cheap, really good gaming external fan/cooling pad I could use that is under 40$? Thanks!

Not a good idea to over clock a laptop. Overheating is almost certainly going to be a problem.
Alot of people have done it before! Is it even possible though? Is there an external fan or cooling pad for cheap I could get to slow or prevent that?

I doubt they have, even if they have, it would not improve game performance to any worthwhile extent, a paltry few percent, it's more dependent on the Graphics chipset.

To increase CPU clock speed that much would take double the power and the cooling system would not cope with the extra power dissipation required.

You might improve the external cooling a bit, but not enough, Laptops were not designed to be used that way.

Portable computers and most of brand name desktop ones generally have poor BIOS options and already are made at the edge of performance due to battery and heating restrictions. No much room for any OC and few percents of OC normally brings less than 1% of performance increase.

Except for the Alienware line, I haven't seen a Dell that has OC capabilities in the BIOS.

I have an AMD processor so my case is a little different

I've regularly overclocked AMD processors -- and the procedure is the same as with Intel processors -- and generates a lot of heat.

Laptops are not designed to handle additional overclocking, as are desktops.

Them the pitfalls of small confined spaces like laptops. Some of them barely keep their cool on ordinary use.

Overclocking a laptop is a thoroughly bad idea. These systems lack just about everything necessary for safe and effective overclocking. All else being equal the faster a computer operates the hotter it will get. In the confined space of a laptop (made inevitable by design priorities) heat is going to be a problem. Overclocking makes this problem worse. Many laptops run hot even at stock speeds. In a highly competitive market manufacturers will push performance as far as is deemed prudent, and sometimes beyond. There is little room for over design here.

Laptop manufacturers are well aware of these issues and usually omit overclocking settings from the BIOS. This protects you from failures and them from the resulting warranty claims. You may be able to achieve overclocking with third party software but the results are rarely satisfactory and the risks high.

Overheating problems can occur in desktops as well but they are less serious and easier to solve.

I don't overclock mine for exactly the reasons you state LMiller7. Have tried it a couple times just to test but the small payoff was not worth the increase in temperatures and probable decrease in life expectancy of the laptop.

Look at my specs tjough. It bothers me that I have a laptop that is .3 GHz or 300 MHz below usual stock clocking for laptops. There is only a few reasons why I got a laptop: One: I originally had a laptop and I hate change. Two: My family bought me a gaming chair that rocks so it doesn't stay in one position. 3: I like being portable

You have a laptop with a CPU/GPU combo with a TDP of 19 watts the same as mine.

You think that in a 19 watt envelope that you can really game with that setup? Specially on Minecraft which is a game that is horrible optimized?

I have the same problems you do with MC and there is no way around it. Badly optimized game on ULV CPU that has bad single threaded performance to begin with? Not happening.

Now I will say, I am on this laptop right this second typing this message. Running Firefox with Steam running and a game I bought a few days ago, Terraria and it is running great. Terraria is optimized and better then MC in my book anyways.

That is IMHO of course.

Thanks!

I also want to add, your laptop will hit 2.7Ghz with turbo, which it will do by nature.

By using anything to overclock your laptop, you are just asking for trouble. It is not made for that and the stock cooling will leave much to be desired.

As I have informed you before, buy an SSD as it really wakes this laptop up. As far as being anything that you seem to want, faster and faster (most of your posts) are just not going to happen, low watt CPU/GPU = low watt type performance, this is especially true of an AMD chip.

And so you know, many AMD CPUs have screwed up temp sensors, so what you might view as safe trying to push the CPU to a limit, may not be.

I have another laptop which is a beast compared to this thing A8, an i7-4810 (google it) and I have been using this laptop for a week without ever wanting to turn the other one on. It is what it is. You don't buy a cheap laptop (that's what this is as the A8 is a cheap CPU) and ask to much of it. Want performance? Open your wallet, want satisfaction? learn to live with what you have. Don't go burning it up because you, as a consumer have no idea how to buy a computer to fit your needs (I'm not trying to be rude here, I just know no other way to put it).

Now, you want to game and I get that. Find games that are properly optimized and don't expect it to play everything under the sun. I don't care how far you overclock this thing, it is not a gaming computer. It can game slightly and decent with game developers who know how to code good clean code.

I've never seen a standard laptop that can be overclocked. The best way to "speed up" a laptop (or desktop, for that matter) is to replace the hard drive with an SSD...
