My mom's friend brought me her laptop for repairs, they haven't been able to use it for a couple years already and I offered to work on it for her in hopes of getting back up and running. It's an Acer Aspire 5542-1615 that was originally running windows 7 but has been updated to windows 8 32Bit.
When I first turned it on it came up with a media test failure which I quickly remedied by fixing the boot order. However now when I attempt to boot it up there is no error, it gets to the screen with the 4 white tiles and spinning dots and acts like it's going to successfully start but then hangs on a black screen for a moment before restarting it's self automatically.
I have the windows 8 disc that was used to update it, I tried running automatic repair and ran into two problems:
One: When you reach the screen to choose your operating system it comes up saying that there is 2 windows 8 installations on volume 2 and a third option for something simply called windows setup.
If you click either of the windows 8 installations on volume 2 you get this error: Automatic Repair couldn't repair your PC
D:\$WINDOWS~BT\Source\Windows.NEW\WINDOWS\System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt
I thought I would try refreshing the system but that also comes up showing 2 windows 8 installations on volume 2.
Any thoughts on how to repair this??
