A friend of mine has a Lenovo Ideapad S415 Touch.

Specs are:

Lenovo IdeaPad S415 Notebook AMD E1-Series E1-2100 (1.00GHz) 4GB Memory 500GB
HDD AMD Radeon HD 8210 14.0" Touchscreen


I have few questions on how to increase Cpu/internet speed on this device. This laptop came with a 64bit version of Windows 8 and now is upgraded to 8.1. At times, it lags with download speed and loading. Its fustrating at times cause i don't think think its meant to run Windows 8.1 64bit somewhat smooth. I did some tweaking with the Registry to help increase the loading times and such. It worked a bit but still then the internet speed is very bad for some reason. Could there be other things that are bogging it down, making it lag?

Is there a some tweaks that could be done to help this problem? I definately would like to know.

The only thing I've dealt with on the CPU speed is assuring it is not throttling down when plugged into AC power. Most Notebooks/Laptops will do a speed step down when on battery-only to conserve the battery charge. If not caring about that it could be set as a desktop or always on in Control Panel, Power Options.

There's a lot of variables involved with Internet speed, first is what the ISP is providing for the monthly price. Another is the routing/servers a download goes through to get to the computer. Another is the Server the file is being downloaded from, may have a limit of how much data can be transferred in a given time or how many connections can be made to it.

Other variables affecting internet speed include security software and browser.

Since we're dealing with Win 8.1, there's the App side of the equation. How much of an impact are they to your friend?

You used the phrase, "at times". Most of the software, by default, seek updates automatically.

I downloaded and installed a Microsoft suite of programs. Never having ran the suite once since its installation, it found time to update while I was downloading something else. The PC was at its mercy until it was done.

I think its mostly the updates that slow it down. To be honest, the speed on it is not bad. Internet speed is a different, story. It should be at least 25mbits per second not 5mbits. I used TCP/IP Optimizer for that and it improved slightly. Trying to get into the more technical aspect on why WIN 8.1 has all these added Protocols, instead of keeping it the way Windows Xp did. Thats the main issue cause i've scoured google for REG fixes all over the place. Its not simple at all. Trust me.

start with services.msc from a command prompt.. start changing all (google it ofcourse) services to "manual"

then type msconfig from the command prompt.. start googling what you see in there too to help..

your internet needs to be tested with "speedofme" from google.. and also you need to plug it in ethernet if that old crappy model even has an ethernet port..

Definately a low end model for Lenovo. That being said, the fact that Windows 8 64bit being preloaded with it is an insult.

This could mean reloading a lesser OS to make it run decent. See what happens!
