I have a almost brand new HP laptop with 8.1 on it. It was working fine until 2 days ago. Now, I can't shut it down unless I hold down the power button..it won't re-start..I can't open certain programs.

I've ran Malware checks and ran my Anti-Virus, all came up clean.

What could have caused this? I was watching Netflix, fell asleep, shut my laptop off a few hoursa later, and it started all this.

I can't even do the Windows "refresh" becuz my laptop won't restart..it just sticks on the window saying "restarting" or "Shuting Down" with the little white circle...until I hold down the power button.

Any help?

Hey mate,

[Edit] See my post (#5) below before using the tutorials numbered below: http://www.eightforums.com/performa...ll-not-restart-shut-down-more.html#post451000 [/Edit]

There are a plethora of tutorials that may help you out, so I'll post a few at a time:

1. Fix system files - (OPTION 2) http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/3047-sfc-scannow-command-run-windows-8-a.html

2. Restore the system to a time previous to your problem (IF this option works, as it may require a restart) - http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/4692-system-restore-how-do-windows-8-a.html

3. Prevent Windows from automatically installing device drivers (which sometimes are faulty) - (Select the option to NOT automatically install drivers) Device Installation Settings - Windows 7 Help Forums

4. Run the Windows update troubleshooter (as it may be linked) - Description of the Windows Update Troubleshooter

5. Update your antivirus product IF you aren't using the built-in Antivirus called Defender

6. Try restarting again

7. Update device drivers & BIOS via the HP website. If you need help here, please tell me the model number of your laptop and I'll search for them myself

Hey mate,

I believe it is Avast!, according to the system specs. I've never seen that one cause these problems before, but it is definitely possible. I'd be curious to know if you think it best to remove it (at least for now).

Wow, I just found something:

Did you install the optional update KB3000850, if so uninstall it. People who have Avast have had problems with this update. Avast is to fix their problem and you should be able to reinstall KB3000850 within the next day or so.

It appears Avast! may have some problems with a recent Windows update. You might consider removing it until they fix it, or removing that Windows update until someone fixes that problem.

Just like I said to a girlfriend (long time ago) "There's first time for everything".
I went thru all of that already and it was Avast as main culprit.
