My laptop freezes whenever I click something.

Whenever I click something, for some reason, my laptop will just freeze. However, I can move my mouse around. Also, this doesn't just happen for a few minutes, this goes on forever. I had it sitting for about an hour with no luck, and it was just frozen. How do I fix this? Does anybody know a solution?

Sorry, I forgot to add that making anything, such as task manager, just ends up freezing my computer as well. Basically, my computer is unusable at this state when it comes to downloading/running things.

Well, that is going to be a tough one. What make/model laptop and do you have any recovery media, disc or flash drive?
Have you installed any software or updated Windows just before this started?

There are number of issues that can cause your laptop to freeze.

How long is it on before this happens ? Could be cause of overheating. Dust built up in the chassis and vents or
on top of something causing it to to not get proper ventilation.

Installed software running, Anti-Virus, etc..

Right Click Windows Start Button select Event Viewer, Windows Logs > Application
Look for critical errors that say app hang, app crash, or anything that relates to the CURRENT problem.
Note the event ID, and the source codes and Google search them or post here.

Could be corrupt system files try this first Right click Windows Start Button select Command Prompt (admin) type or copy paste sfc /scannow

It could be a hard drive that is going bad or corrupted. Virus on PC, run Full System scan.

To check a hard drive use chkdsk Right click Windows Start Button select Command Prompt (admin) type or copy paste
chkdsk c: /f /r

Not enough RAM could be another cause

From the tutorial---

screenshot_183.jpg

I do it this way---

sfc /scannow
THEN
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
THEN
sfc /scannow

Works good. :)

Not enough RAM could be another cause.

Maybe try Windows Memory Diagnostic---

David, my understanding is he can't do anything with the laptop, it freezes as soon as he tries anything.

OH.

Seems then he needs to do something on restart from a command prompt or task manager.

ZWeldy, do you have another mouse to try? Have you tried a different USB port?

Um, he said mouse in OP plus I have a laptop (notebook) and I seldom use the touch pad, have a bluetooth mouse. :)

Many first time posters here have very basic computer knowledge. Was only trying to narrow down what the problem actually is.

My Labtop does same...but runs ok on Firefox

Searching internet finds others having same problem. I'm just running Firefox until a Microsoft update fixes problem.
