Cannot get login screen

I shut down my computer last night and walked away. When I went to log in today I receive a message that an app is preventing shut down. The screen does not let me do anything. It shows this message and says the computer is locked. It does not give me the ability to log in or do anything else. I am not very good with computers and not familiar with all the computer terminology. Please help! My computer is an HP Envy and I am running windows 8 (which I really struggle with!) thank you in advance for any help.

If press and hold the power button for 4 seconds it should power off. Then you can power up again and see if you can log on. It sounds like it has locked up on that screen and is frozen there.
