I was listening to a tech show and the tech guy said to back up; My documents My Pictures, My music, etc. etc. I have always just copied my whole user file, Am I doing it wrong?
Thank you Caperjacj, I have been just coping the whole user file with my WD Passport USB 3 and in an hour or less I have the whole file. My belief is that if/when I restore, Ill just replace the user file and everything will be in the right place.
There's much more in User folder than just those files you want to backup. Just coping whole folder, even if windows would let you, could screw up new installation. I don't know how large your backup disk or OS disk are but since you are backing up more than you need it would be better to use a dedicated automatic backup program or even better to do regular backups of whole disk or just system partition.
I can confirm that, if you are really into (regular) backups I recommend a dedicated software like Acronis True Image or any other reliable backup solution. Those come with advanced features like incremental or differential backups, system images, the possibility to extract certain files out of your system images...
