Solved High disk and CPU usage after upgrade.

Hey Guys, this is my first post here.

Today I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1. For some reason, after upgrading, my hard disk usage is always hovering at around 60% usage and my CPU usage is always hovering at around 50%. This is when the PC is idle. When I was using 7, the disk would rarely jump over 30% usage and the CPU would never go above 7% when idle. The sound of the hard disk constantly working away is doing my head in, not to mention it's at around 50 degrees as opposed to 45 degrees previously.

Any help is greatly appreciated guys, thanks in advance.

How long since you upgraded? There is a lot of indexing and optimization that goes on after upgrade. Will be a lot of background activity for awhile.

Thanks for the quick reply. I upgraded about 5 hours before starting this thread. Is it better to do a clean install? Or is it okay to upgrade?

My disk and CPU and CPU are still under high usage. Its been over 24 hours now, surely all the optimization etc should be done?

That pic is not much help. doesn't show what is using the bulk of the 31% CPU usage. Try posting one that shows what is using the most. Is it Indexing Service?

Please click on the details tab and then on CPU to sort by CPU descending so we can see what is happening.

It appears to have settled for the moment. If i catch in misbehaving again I'll upload another screenshot.

The CPU usage has remained nice and calm for the last couple of hours but the hard drive is going crazy. The usage is between 60 to 100 %

Download: TreeSize Free Portable and run.
Look under C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows, there is a file Windows.edb. Since you've just upgrade to 8 from 7, Windows might be busy rebuilding the search index. Check the filesize, if it is large then just disable the Windows Search service and delete it, let Windows rebuild the index.

Also, look under a hidden folder under C:\System Volume Information to see how big the space it's taken, you might have some old system restore points carried over from Windows 7 and can cause corruption.
