Installed SSD on an Atom-based Netbook, performance issues

So my dad decided it was a good idea to upgrade his Netbook (which he takes everywhere with him) with an SSD, so naturally I made sure I let him know beforehand that an SSD was not going to perform as advertised on his Netbook given that it only has a SATA 2 (3Gb/s) interface and a pretty low end Intel Atom based CPU. He agreed and still took a chance with it.

The problem is, even in my low expectations, I was sure it was still going to improve things quite a bit, but the Netbook runs almost exactly the same with it?, which was pretty unexpected.

The SSD is a Crucial MX100 128GB.

So... Is there I'm missing? is there a software I need to be running in order to get the most out of Crucial SSD's?, I'm running a Plextor SSD on my main gaming rig and it runs absolutely beastly without any software, etc.

EDIT: I made sure I changed the SATA Mode to ACHI before installing Windows 8.1.

Also, I did not install any Intel Chipset drivers or anything on the Netbook given how old it is, Windows should have the latest drivers for it (I did run Windows Update).

Did you apply all updates? Also, be sure to "optimize" the SSD, using Win8.1's disk tools. EVERY PC I've ever put an SSD into, even those with SATA 2 support, are much, much faster then they were. Your SSD may be bad... I've had this happen a few times.

I did apply all updates.

I haven't "optimized" it yet, will do it later today, currently at work mate. Hopefully it's not a bad unit.

Give it some time to run on idle, like for one night, There is a thing called GC (Garbage Collection) embedded in SSD's firmware that works mostly when disk is idle. Also make sure that Trim is enabled in Windows. There's also difference if windows is installed clean or just transferred from HDD when SATA was in IDE mode. You can also use: CrystalDiskMark - Software - Crystal Dew World or Alex Intelligent Software - Downloads to see if it measures up to expectations. Generally, on SATA2 you will see reading speed and writing about half of maximum performance on SATA3 but parts important for windows performance like reading and writing small uncompressed files of 4K not much lower.
