It was confirmed that the sfc should work the same in W8. So I am getting corrupted file messages. Ran it 3 times and it did not clear itself. What would be the next avenue I need to pursue to get the system perfect for a system image? Thanks for any assistance!

It's normally required to run sfc /scannow 3or more times, if it doesn't fix the problem, you could do a Refresh or a system restore, also have a look at the Tip box at the end of this Tutorial:http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/3047-sfc-scannow-command-run-windows-8-a.html
HTH.

Hello brummfan,
I am not sure when the system was last good, so that is a shot in the dark. As soon as the sfc /scannow finishes, I'll try the procedure you suggested in the link. Could you explain what a refresh does. How much downloaded stuff do I lose???? New to this level of procedures, even on W7.
Also I wanted to boot into safe mode and went in to boot and set to safe mode. I somehow did not set the GUI so it is booting into the Administrators cmd.exe. How do I get back to normal? Thanks for your time and hopeful more assistance.
Cheers
Glenn

HTH.

Okay, followed the instructions for the volume listing shown in tutorial

Capture.PNG

Whereas my list show not including size differences

Volume 0 Ltr D Fs Type DVD-ROM Size 0 No media
Volume 1 Ltr NTFS Type Partition Size 350 MB Healthy System
Volume 2 Ltr C NTFS Type Parition Size 148 GB Healthy Boot

So I am unsure how to structure the sfc command properly!
Thanks again!

Hello Glenn,

The tutorial below can help give you more details about refreshing Windows 8. Personally, I would recommend to backup anything that you do not want to lose to be safe though.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2293-refresh-windows-8-a.html

Howdy and thanks for stopping by!! I ran into a problem with your sfc fix as noted it the reply to brummyfan. Also stuck in safe boot......
I will read the refresh info in greater depth and hopefully figure it out. Backup, only have the one drive.
Always appreciated!

Glen, I'm not quite sure what you are trying to do here. If it's to run the file checker and if it does work as W7/Vista then you need to type sfc /scannow into a command prompt (run as admin) and press enter. It runs under windows on the OS in use on whatever partition that is.

Are we sure it runs OK in W8 anyway. I seem to remember in the dim and distant past a lot of folk having supposed errors reported in Vista doing this and it was a bug that was corrected with an update.

Hello Mooly,
I have used sfc /scannow in Windows 7 without problems. This is the first time I ran it in W8. I have run it as admin in user account 3 or 4 times and in the Adminstrator account 4-5 times. It continually says Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
So I am assuming that there are some corrupt files although I have noted no problems. Today is the second day I am running it.
But I was trying to clear a problem removing a no-functioning ZA firewall and wanted to get to safe mode to really clean it. I got into safe mode the totally wrong way and am now stuck in an endless loop of rebooting into Safe Mode without the Graphics an just the Administrators cmd.exc screen. Needless to say I am way out of my depth in the command line mode, but need to get back into the regular system to try the above mentioned fixes for the sfc corrupt files!
Thanks for your time
Glenn

Hmmm...
Think this is one of those where you need to be sat in front of it. If it's totally locked up then maybe a forced shutdown by holding the power button might work (I hate doing that though, although sometimes there is no choice).

At this point in time, I wouldn't go too much off the reported file errors as you might be chasing a non existant problem.

I've reverted back to Vista this afternoon (using a full Acronis image) or I would have been able to check the sfc thing myself. I couldn't get W8 and Vista to dual boot properly as that kept reporting all sorts of errors and saying it needed to check discs for consistency and so on.

Shawn, thanks for the assist. I have not made myself sufficiently clear. I messed up, pretty big. Not recalling the exact boxes I checked in the System Congifuration Menu on the boot tab, I am LOCKED into booting into safe mode, without any graphic user interface, only the Administrator's cmd.exe box. If I exit that, I get a black screen, nothing. CtrlAltDel brings up the options to lock, switch user, Sign out, change password and the Task Manager. Everything I've tried boots back into the administrator's cmd.exe box or if I log in as user, the user's cmd.exe. I can't get back to the System Configuration as I don't have graphics and don't know the command line instructions. Ratz!

What happens if you force a shutdown ?

If it's still pancaked but will shutdown if forced then maybe try altering the bios to boot from DVD and try a repair from the ISO W8 disc.

Just a little off topic.... what's happened to the thread notifications tonight (this thread). They are miles wide. Thought it was something I had done but forwarded them to a Hotmail account and that says they are to wide to display.

Hey Mooly,
I managed to get msconfig.exe running from the command line and it brought up the Systems Configuration Box and I was able to get back to normal booting, aha you say, success. Pipe dreams. Now it boot up out of safe mode, but the screens are blank with a grey empty taskbar..... So I am now as you suggested doing a Refresh My PC. If that doesn't work I am just going to reload it. This is a good but not fun way to learn a OS:confused:! Will be back, with results of Refresh!!
Thank you!

Ah no luck! Tried the refresh but still didn't work. Finally reloaded it. I don't know what is doing it, but with very few programs reinstalled, I did the sfc again after a fresh load and it still gave me the corrupt files error. Then, I was unaware, but I found it doing a scheduled maintenance. Wonder what that entails. It is running. I don't really know if I want to reload it again as the base fresh install and test the sfc. One question on something I did different. In the boot tab > advanced, I found that it had installed with only one core enable and the other blocked. I corrected that............ We will see!
Thanks for your assistance!

By default, the "Number of processors" box should be unchecked to allow Windows to use all cores of the CPU.

I'd say it's probably time to bite the bullet and reinstall. :(
