Hi I have a windows 8.1 dell laptop ,for some reason system restore is not creating points manually or automatically, when I try to make a restore point manually the working bar just keeps moving at the sane time though I noticed in the device manger a generic volume shadow copy entry will show up with a yellow mark beside it ,I have tried maybe 10-15 times to uninstall this and try system restore again ,but this keeps repeating itself,
I have also went into safe mode but system restore points can't be made under safe mode, I did the repository thing where I rename that folder to old and reset repository in safe mode ,same result any ideas pls Thks

Make sure System Restore is enabled

In the elevated command prompt run sfc /scannow.

Also run chkdsk /f /r

If Automatic Maintenance is turned off, put it back on.

How is your free disk space and are there any restore points in the system.

Run a full virus scan and run Malwarebytes (Free) in the event that the system restore files have been infected. One hick here is that the infection, if there is one, may be to deeply embedded and can re-infect in the future.

If after all this and the computer does not return to normal, you will have to do a Clean Install of Windows. Back up your data first.

Open Services ( Win+X->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services) and double check if Volume Shadow Copy service is running.

If it is not running then try to start it. Also make sure the Remote Procedure Call(RPC) is also running.

If it still fails to create a restore point then It could be the hidden folder under C drive: System Volume Information is corrupted. This folder contains the System restore points. You can try to delete this folder and Windows will rebuild it upon reboot. However, this task cannot be done while Windows is running. In order to see the content of this folder and delete it, I have to use Linux Live CD.

vsc drivers

Hi Purple,
in 1 of your earlier posts you said Yellow Exclamation mark, on VSC driver.
Update the driver it should then clear the error.
If that fails right click on events for that driver and post the results.

Note re clean install
Beware you said
I >> upgraded << the clean reinstall will take you back to the original factory settings, for your original OS.
