wireless card goes to sleep

I leave my laptop on at night to capture updates etc. On my new HP Envy with win 8.1 by morning the wireless card seems to have gone to sleep and the signal strength icon is grayed out. The pci power settings are "OFF" and the power setting in Device manager are also set to NOT turn it off. Anybody have any ideas? HP is sending me a new wireless card, but I have doubts this will fix it.

Hey mate, some helpful tutorials that might help:

Scroll to step 2 to select the best 'sleep' settings for you (Works on any current Windows version OS): Power Options and Sleep Mode Problems

Also, despite downloading things, the registered 'inactivity' will put the computer to sleep if you have it set to sleep after a short amount of time. Speaking plainly, if it is set to sleep in 30 minutes, once it reaches that point, it will, even if it is downloading something at the moment. To change this, set the sleep time longer than it is normally, say 3 hours or whatever works. You may also have to change when the hard drive turns off, because this may keep your downloads from continuing. Changing the power settings to HIGH might fix the issue. You can also save different power plans so that you can switch back and forth easily, for such situations as you describe:

Dusty,
I am aware of all those settings, but like I said in the post, I have everything set to NOT sleep when it is plugged in, including the ones in Device manager for the wireless network card. So it should not sleep, but it does.

So you are speaking specifically of the card, not the computer sleeping.

The only other suggestion that I can provide:
install all important updates from Windows Update. Also, Make sure that you update drivers. Consider especially the wireless card's driver and computer chipset, and a good idea to update the BIOS.

The computer is only a few days old and the HP support assistant has done all the updates including the bios. So, maybe HP is correct when they want to replace the wlan/bluetooth card. You cannot believe the trouble I have had with HP laptops. This is the 5th one they have sent me because the previous 4 had unresolvable problems. This one is heading in the same direction. But I'll find out when I install the replacement card.

Hp is reportedly the most popular pc company in terms of computers sold. Sometimes there are bad apples. I've had major trouble with Dell recently.

Before purchasing a new computer, I for one plan on going to the support website of the manufacturer to see if there are recent drivers for it. I do not want to get a new computer and have the drivers be 2 years old, as was the case for my last Dell computer. Lesson learned. Well, best of luck. Hope it works out better for you. Though I didn't have the answer, someone else may.
