Solved Can't Refresh or reset Win8.1 with Win8 Disk

I need to rebuild Win8.1 update back to system specs. When I go to refresh or reset to factory original it asks for the disk. I put in my Win8 disk which is the retail from Microsoft. It comes back as the wrong disk. I think maybe because it is a Win8 disk and not a win8.1 disk?

Anyone have any thoughts how I can fix this?

Is there a way to get this done without having to reinstall win8 and patch all the way up to win8.1 update?

TIA

Hello Blue1, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you like, you could use OPTION ONE to download a Windows 8.1 ISO file with your retail Windows 8 product key, then create a Windows 8.1 installation DVD/USB from the ISO to use to refresh/reset with.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/18309-windows-8-windows-8-1-iso-download-create.html

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn
Tried what you said and it says this key doesn't work with your edition please try a different key.

Why does MS make it so difficult to refresh or restore your whole system when you have already purchased a win8 key from them?

I have the win8 disk and it takes forever to restore from win8 to win8.1/update. MS mistake why make me pay for this ridiculousness.

What can I do now?

If you are trying to use the Windows 8 key, then that will not work with a Windows 8.1 ISO. You could use the generic 8.1 key above to install with, then when installation is finished, change your key to the 8 key to activate with it.

Sorry, where is the generic upgrade key?

Thanks for the help.

1 more Question, if I want to have spades in win7 run on win8.1 Pro upgrade x64 - is there a way to copy my files from win7 HoPrem to win8.1-upgrade? It is a dual boot system.

Thanks again for your help.

You're most welcome.

The Spades question would be best to ask in a new thread to get the best help with it. :)
