Hi there
One minor irritant with the consumer preview is that 3 times I've had a Maintenance in Progress panel come up

Disk light on computer halts or is slow until activity finishes

I can't find out what its doing or how to turn this off --on a small Netbook this KILLS what is otherwise a very satisfactory performer.

Any idea what the computer is doing and how to turn this "feature" off.

I hope its not backing up the system --I do this in my own time.

cheers
jimbo

I turned this off right away, slows down the PC way too much on what is otherwise a very fast OS. Just open the action center, click the arrow next to maintenance, and click change maintenance settings. You can turn it off from there.
Note: This will not work while maintenence is being performed.

OK, how do you turn it OFF. It only allows me to choice a time.

It was locking up my system. I would be on FF and it works great, then I tried to open other programs and nothing would open. I could still use my mouse and switch to Start page and back to desktop but no programs would open. After a forced reset I decide to run SFC /scannow and at 50% it stopped. I then noticed the Action Center Icon and found that Auto Maintenance was running. During troubleshooting the lockups I tried to use a Restore but there were no Restore Points. I check my Restore settings and it was on but the disk space was set to 0%. I updated it and created a Restore point. After this I check the Action Center and Auto Maintenance had completed. I don't know if the Restore option was causing Auto Maintenance to hang and killing my system. I will find out tomorrow as I have Auto Maintenance to run at 5pm so I will see what it does.

Ya, I disabled all this kind of stuff too. You can do so with the Services.msc page.

If you want to leave it enabled and instead, tweak its run time, then go to the Task Scheduler for that. You can also disable or delete the task(s). There are also a few tasks that report to Microsoft that you'll probably want to delete too.

Maybe it's better we let MS get all the reports it wants.

Then they will see how people are trying to use this o/s.

Thanks for the tip and I agree at the moment to just let MS get all the reports. I don't believe MS is "The Evil Empire" some people keep saying it is and I'm sure I won't be flooded with all sorts of emails from MS advertising products or "Get Rich Quick" scams.

During W7 beta testing I let stuff go to MS and didn't get loads of unwanted email from them when W7 was officially released. I see no reason this time either.

Remember you've got virtually FREE use of a decent probably around 400 USD OS at full retail price (equiv to ULTIMATE version) for nearly a YEAR so giving a little bit back to MS in the diagnostic area is IMO good value for money and will eventually make this into a BETTER OS.

Cheers
