Solved Macrium Reflect: Update rescue media?

I am using Macrium Reflect Free to make weekly images of my PC. Every few weeks Macrium provides updates to the program with bug fixes and even feature enhancements. This is great for a free program and I immediately update my installation.

When you make a rescue disk that will be used to boot a your dead computer and restore a disk image, part of that process sets up the current version of Reflect on that disk. Over time the (old) version on the rescue disk and the current version you are using for backup get further and further apart.

Macrium does not provide any guidance that I can find on remaking your rescue media to keep it up to date. The obvious thing would be to remake rescue media for each update. Does anyone (maybe someone with the paid edition?) have any info on criteria from Macrium that would safely allow a less tedious frequency of media updates?

Per Macrium Support Forum Questions and Answers, "When you receive a Macrium update notification, we will indicate in the change log if the change impacts the rescue environment. If this change impacts your specific usage, then this would be a good time to rebuild your rescue CD".

I have Macrium (paid version). I don't make new rescue discs (I use the WinPE versions) every time. Depends on what the updates/fixes were.

I have a four copy license and have different hardware and OS' on the 4 systems. Thus I have to make 4 Rescue discs, as the drivers for the specific PC are loaded onto the Rescue disc. I don't know if this is really needed, but I do it to be on the safe side (and to avoid Murphy's Law).

Thanks for your reponses. I did not realize a lowly "free" user had access to the forum! :)

Regarding remaking multiple disks, I have 2 to make, like you I remake them both. After all, the last thing you want to fail is your backups!

This thread is exactly the reason I don't and WON'T use Macrium Reflect, or any of the Johnny Come Lately backup programs.
I've tried most of them and even bought a few, so that I could try them, Full Featured.

In 1997 I started using a backup program from New Zealand, called simply "Ghost". In '98 Symantec bought the program and for many years didn't do much to change it. Then in 2005 they updated the program to work with the new format that Vista and 7 were using.
That version of Ghost, ver 11.5, still works today as it did nine years ago.
(a friend of mine also uses is to back up his Linux server)

I just used it (on a DOS boot CD) to back up and restore Windows 8.1/Pro/32. It worked just as well as it did on Windows XP.
It's nice to have a Backup program that I can run on any PC I own (8 of them) with any OS, from XP to 8.1. (all with the same CD)
No fixes or updates required. They did it right the first time. :)

As Fox Mulder would say, "The truth is out there!".

Cheers mates!

I really don't understand what this thread has to do with you not using Macrium Reflect. Have you in fact used it? (In the "many"of them which you used) I understand you use and like Ghost and that's great. However, I use and like Macrium Reflect and feel others might find it acceptable for their backup also. I have used Macrium backups and restored my pc with Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 with no problems at all. I'm not arguing with you - just stating another opinion so the people who are trying to make a decision about backup programs have both sides. :)

This is not necessary. 1 disc will work on all systems. I have 6 systems and only 1 disc that I only change when the change log says so.

I have used Ghost for many years. It is a Norton product. But Macrium is far superior in all aspects.

Norton Ghost messed me up few times in the past so badly, no words for it. Thought I had a good backup but when I needed it, it gave up the "ghost" and I lost quite a number of important files because of it. After that and a great flop Norton utilities for Win95, where it used to make a mess of Windows, I lost all the fate in Norton products.
