I've always preferred separating my data from the OS and do not intend to change my ways despite OS manufacturer's wishes. Just pondering the advisability of creating a data partition (or partitions) from the existing C: partition - i.e. affects on any of the various restore options. I intend to use Macrium Reflect imaging to the Data partition and then backing this up to a USB drive - have used this successfully before on a Dell. Will the boot CD (PE) created on another laptop (Dell with W7 Prof) work on this system or will I have to create another CD. The CD works OK on the Dell. Don't intend to use any other restore options (if available) if I can get Macrium to work and I would leave all the other existing partitions alone. The Lenovo was bought with 8.0 installed and I inadvertently upgraded to 8.1 through the store I think before I knew of any possible problems that I could encounter - and all the additional partitions. I've installed Classic Shell as I prefer the older ways.

If I recall correctly, I should be able to bring the C: partition down to about 60 - 80 GB by switching off Restore, Hibernation and the Pagefile - using Defraggler and Disk Management - which worked fine on the Dell. Initially it only allowed about half reduction until I switched off Restore I think.

Any comments will be appreciated along with your experiences of doing this. Disk Management image included.

Do this.

1. Disable hibernation - http://www.eightforums.com/performance-maintenance/4932-how-turn-hibernate-completely-off.html

2. Change your page file to zero

3. Make a custom refresh point http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/9310-refresh-windows-8-set-custom-recovery-image-active.html

4. change your page file back to system defined.

5. re-enable hibernation (if you want to)

My CustomRefresh.wim (windows + Office and a few small programs) is a bit less than 7GB. My C:\Windows is 9.2 GB.

Hope this helps.

Why no Backup and Restore section?

View attachment 40429

Thank you but I meant why is there no Backup and Restore section on this forum as there is over on the Win 7 forum. I realise some would like us to backup all our information to Skydrive etc. but presumably we still do have free speech and freedom of choice. Is this why there is no such section - to 'persuade' us to use such services.

Thank you. I am intent on using Macrium Reflect for backup purposes. So I would be grateful if you stuck to this topic.

We just opted to include it under "Performance and Maintenance" instead. :)

All sorted. I forgot about the $MFT file but it still allowed me to partition as I wanted. There was some info on the Macrium website concerning CDs created on different machines so I made a new one anyway. Perhaps I'll get around to using USBs one day!

Thanks all.

Yep, a cheap pack of 4GB USB flash drives will just make your day when you see how much faster they are compared to DVDs. :)

If you format a 32 or 64 GB usb as NTFS instead of FAT 32 you get one big image file rather than a bunch of 4GB files. :)

I'll have a look at the USB options, thanks chaps.

In my previous experiences with Macrium I've found it only necessary to restore the C: partition even though I would also image the 100 MB partition too along with the C: drive. I might as well carry on doing this since space is not a problem. I gathered the following information regarding partitions on my system from a blog -

WINRE_DRV - 1000 MB Windows RE bootable (for Recovery Mode) - Used when booting into Windows Recovery (Win RE) environment.

SYSTEM_DRV - 260 MB System UEFI bootable (EFI/Windows boot menu) - UEFI boots this partition, it contains Windows NTLDR, HAL, Boot.txt, and some drivers (Windows will not boot without this).

LRS_ESP - 1000 MB Lenovo Recovery System (EFI bootable) - Lenovo One Key Recovery (OKR) button boots into this partition, which allows to do factory restore.

Microsoft reserved partition - 128 MB Reserved Microsoft partition for GPT-based disks - Must exist and must be 128 MB, used by Windows when moving or changing partitions through Disk Manager.

Windows8_OS - 950 GB

Unnamed partition - 450 MB ?

LENOVO - 25 GB Lenovo D: drive - contains mainly drivers and installers for some bundled apps.

PBR_DRV - 12.85 GB Lenovo factory reset image - Used by One Key Recovery system to reset laptop to factory condition.

Would I be correct with imaging the following even though some of the options to restore other than by Macrium might not be available. I'll probably image all the other partitions too, just once, to be safe.

WINRE_DRV
SYSTEM_DRV
Microsoft reserved partition

Also, any idea what the 450 MB unnamed partition might be?

Hi offpiste,

A screenshot of your disk management would be helpful in making that determination. Also, your strategy with Macrium is sound; however, I generally image the entire drive but mine is much smaller so your approach may make more sense if time is of the essence.

A screenshot like so:

Yes, thanks theog, I suppose the 'Recovery' was a bit of a giveaway,

I might as well add this partition too.

Thanks all for your help. :)
