Hi, I'm currently running 8.1 and wish to effect a Refresh Recovery but when I enter disc when requested it states 'Not Valid'.
I purchased PC with Win 7Pro but in the time frame that allowed free upgrade to Win 8 Pro. I upgraded by downloading and installing - however I also purchased the Official upgrade discs 32/64 bit from Microsoft and received them some weeks after upgrade took place. I have since auto upgraded via App Store to 8.1 and I now wish to use Refresh Recovery but no matter which disc I insert Win7/8 it states invalid.
Any advice welcomed. Thank you.

If you don't have an OEM PC that came with Windows 8 preinstalled and updated Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, then when you refresh/reset Windows, it will reinstall Windows 8.1, but only if you have Windows 8.1 USB/DVD installation media.

Note! You must insert the Windows 8.1 USB/DVD installation media.

To Download a Windows 8.1 ISO File using a Windows 8 Product Key

NOTE: This will not work if you use an OEM product key.

Thank you for the prompt reply. Unfortunately it won't work. My PC came with W7 installed (I have the disc and code). I then downloaded and ran the discounted upgrade to W8 with the code provided on the day of it's release. (I also sent for and purchased the W8 upgrade Discs) Later I upgraded to W8.1 via the App Store but do NOT have a disc for that.
Refresh will NOT accept my W7 code nor the code I have for W8 - stating not valid. This also applies when attempting to download an iso version of W8.1 (It states 'you already have 8.1)
So I'm stuck, refresh won't run and codes not accepted by the Download site. My OS is legal and activated and accepted by Windows. So where can I possibly go from here please?

Did you try the link above? I upgraded the same way as you - 7 Ultimate to 8 Pro using the cheap €15 key (this turns your install from OEM to retail channel) and then upgraded to 8.1. I download 8.1 ISO using the method in that link.

Hi adamf, I tried the above and used both the W7 & W8 Keys which were provided by the supplier of the PC for W7 and by Microsoft email for W8. Unfortunately neither were accepted.
Actually I've tried every combination I can find using the considerable list in the Brink Tutorials and all failed. My W8.1 is working very well with one exception namely the very small number of Apps that I use(d). I don't have a touch screen and only used Skype and Facebook Apps on a regular basis. Because of their frequent failures I've since downloaded and installed the Desktop version of Skype and now obtain Facebook via my Waterfox Browser. They both work well that way and I've uninstalled the App versions. Since day one of using W8, I for the most part use it as per W7 with my frequent programs on the Desktop Taskbar and lesser used programs obtained via the Start Page. So, apart from those misbehaving Apps all is well and I think I'll leave well alone and see what the promised update of April 10th produces.
Thanks for the advice.
Regards.
Yorky.

Thanks again for that 'adamf'; I've just looked the link up and I shall create a recovery image when I finish with some little chores later today. Help and advice is always appreciated being an octogenarian I don't do too badly with modern technology but still have lots to learn

You are welcome - sorry we couldn't fix the ISO issue. Don't worry if creating the image seems to get stuck - it does that - it is just pretty slow.

Hi again 'adamf', I ran command prompt as per details provided and left the PC for some 45 minutes to have tea. When I returned it was already completed with a successful 'Refresh Image Created 0f some 13+GB'. So it didn't take long at all. I've also bookmarked the tutorial so that I may refer to it again as and when required.
Once again Windows Eight Forum and it's members (as did Windows 7 Forum) came to my rescue. Thanks to all concerned.
Regards.
