Monitoring core performance

Windows 7 had a really nice desktop gadget for monitoring the core distribution on my dual-core machine. I just tried to find something similar for Windows 8 but I couldn't find any desktop gadgets at all....

Have they gone forever or can I re-instate them somehow?

Thanks. I installed 8GadgetPack a couple of hours ago and so far, it seems fine. One more question if I may....

When I was first looking for the gadgets (in Windows itself) I opened Windows 8.1's search bar and typed in "desktop gadgets". This resulted in a "results" window popping up in what appeared to be full-screen mode. No matter what I did I simply couldn't get rid of it. I tried all the usual stuff - backspace / delete / CTRL+C / all the function keys. You name it. I tried it. Eventually I had to bring up Task Manager which seemed to be the only way to get back to my desktop.

Actually, this isn't the first time this has happened. Double-clicking on any graphics file (JPEG / GIF / BMP etc) also brings up a full-screen app that's seemingly impossible to get rid of.

What am I missing here?? There must be some way to dismiss these full-screen windows when they appear???

ALT - F4 is the "usual" way to close an Metro app.

ALT+F4... that's an obvious one that I didn't try, but you're right - it works!

I don't know if it's just a coincidence - but ever since I installed 8GadgetPack I've been plagued by this annoying popup which keeps appearing every 2-3 days:-

Does anyone know if it's associated with 8GadgetPack - and if so, can it be disabled?

go to the installed programs and uninstall it...
the problem is that if you didn't do so already, then you probably won't be able to sneak around in the C drive to kick out any obvious leftovers of that program...
anyways, next time read what appears on screen before downloading, when downloading, and when installing any program. The effects of not doing so can be quite destructive. Imagine having a dozen of unwanted programs such as that pop-up on a computer...

Are you implying that this is a known consequence of installing 8GadgetPack or are you just making a guess? I'm only asking because the 8GadgetPack web site implies that it doesn't install popups etc.

I also installed 'Start8' and 'WindowBlinds' (from Stardock) round about the same time (but I paid for them - so I'd be a bit annoyed if they're pestering me with popups!!)

just making a guess
If you paid for those, then I don't expect the problem to come from them.

from the image you posted I can see there's a "more info" link, if you click it and post the link here, I can check it out. Or you can use the link and try to solve the issue :p

You could also use the Resource Monitor for this. It can be made very small and it doesn't use much CPU.

Thanks for the offer. By reading that small text at the bottom of my screenshot I noticed the word IMinent which I decided to Google. It turns out (I think) that this is something to do with the "IMinent Toolbar" which is something I'd never heard of - and didn't even know was installed. However, it was pretty simple to uninstall using Control Panel. I'll need to keep monitoring things to make sure it doesn't come back!

The interesting thing is that it seemed to get installed at around the same time that I installed the trial versions of WindowBlinds and Start8 so I'm beginning to suspect that Stardock might be the culprit!!

When used with discernment, Resource Monitor is useful for pinpointing bottle necks and misbehaving processes in cpu, memory, disk and network.
