I am having an issue with my HDD space. At times the free space on my Local Drive C: decreases by 2 GB.

If i reboot it usually increases back to the 2 GB i lost. I can not seem to figure out what is causing this to happen.
I read sometimes a virus can duplicate files, i ran numerous full system scans with Norton and Windows malicious Removal tool, they have shown nothing.

Also thinking it can be caused by Windows defragment tool but that is set to a weekly schedule. I think it may be a program doing this, but which one. Something updating, but would it take 2GB to do this.

I posted a Speccy file to look at what is on the system and running and on system, even though this could be something that is not always running.

Not sure what else to think it could be, but it strange, not a great loss of space because of the sizes having 2 drives on the system. Any help or advice is appreciated.ty

The hibernate file uses a lot of space. temporary files use a lot of space. page file uses a lot of space. unnecessary updates (old) use lots of space. Programs can use a lot of space, and may often update themselves.

You could use an additional scan through malwarebytes free 'mbam' program to check if your antivirus overlooked some items, but other than that, it may not be too big of a deal. If you are still curious, someone else may provide more suggestions, as I've run out. If I think of anything more, I'll be sure to post :)

I suppose defragmentation might do something like this as files are moved around, but I'm not positive.

I regularly clean temp files using CCleaner, page files i know not to much about to mess with any of those settings. I usually control my programs from either unnecessary updates or too frequent updates and also to notify me of updates before downloading them if it can.

I do have hibernate disabled. Yes i knew of Malewarebytes, a good software and also SuperAntiSpyware, i can try them, free versions. Yes, i knew a defragment software can do this,i had Diskeeper and the intelliwrite can use up to 2gb but i do not use this anymore and as said my Windows optimize is set to weekly defrag..

My guess would be that it is the shadowstorage usage that is expanding and contracting. Keep an eye on the Allocated part with this command:

Hi whs,

O.k. i regularly delete restore points and create new ones and not to long after i know an install or update went o.k..
Not sure i understand the expand and contract, it would expand if i installed something or made changes, but remain that way till i either added another install or change, correct?

So i do not think it is this, here is an image of the command done recently, i knew to check this also,ty

Give TreeSize Free a try. It will show you exactly where disk space is being used.

Possible solution!!!

Hey mate,

I had a similar problem with a 'little piglet' of a program called PC Tools Registry Mechanic. Great for cleaning the registry, not so good in Windows 7 at leaving free space on the hard drive. If you have this program installed, delete it, then go to Program Files and delete any left over folders. In my case I removed the program, but it not so generously left a 120Gig 'temp' file on C: drive!!!

I noticed that you have CCleaner, which is a similar program to Registry Mechanic, I recommend that you remove it too...

However to be "scientific" about the program that is at fault simply open Resource Manager, then look at how much disk space is being consumed by respective programs -

Disk-Usage.PNG

I hope that this helps.

Kind Regards,

Davo

Thanks Davo, i will definitely give that a try. I did temporarily look at resource monitor. I do not rely only on CCleaner for removing TEMP files, i do know where to look for them if i need to. Oh, and no Registry cleaners for me i do not like them they cause more harm then good. Thanks again.

O.k. i believe i might have possibly found the culprit to my problem. By using TreeSize i saw the most recent increase in a folder of the 2GB i have been wondering where it was going to. Turns out it is in a Users Public Temp folder. As said before this does not happen right away when i turn on system, after awhile it occurs and if i reboot it decreases 2GB.

I am posting a screen shot of it, i believe this is due to Windows Media Center temp files. When i look in this folder i do not find these files, but Tree Size shows them. Is it a hidden file? I have my folder settings to show hidden files and folders.

Are these needed files? Is there a way to delete them? Even though it seems when i reboot there most likely gone.
Then again is this my culprit, did i find the right files, so far i think so because they were the most recent dated files to increase at the time.

Looks as though i may have found it, when i rebooted i reran TreeSize and looked at this folder and files were gone.

Only issue is is it Windows Media Center causing this and why ? I do have Hauppauge WinTV also and this maybe doing it to.

Could be just updates to guides, not sure, but i do not record Live TV.

TH folder is under Recorded TV so I would suspect Hauppauge.

Anyway of knowing why it does this process, for a Temp .srb in Recorded TV ? Way to stop it or does it not matter or does it need to?

I thought for sure it was Windows Media Center. I looked into the settings of both programs, nothing showing this or anyway of changing it. Only Treesize enables me to see it, so if i go directly to folder it is not there.

I feel i figured out this issue and it most likely was the Hauppauge software writing these files everyday on my drive.
I made a change in the software's settings and it looks like it is not occurring anymore. Thanks for help.

Turned out to be Windows Media Center after all, talked to Micorsoft.

This is for anyone who may use this thread for there problem.

No resolve to it though, unless disable Media Center all together .:(
