Computer will not return to sleep after scheduled task

Hi,
Almost every morning for the last month or so I will discover my computer is running (monitor off, but computer not in sleep mode as it should be). To figure out what was waking it, I went to cmd prompt and used the command "powercfg -waketimers":

C:\WINDOWS\system32>powercfg -waketimers
Timer set by [SERVICE] \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Windows\System32\svchost.exe (Sys
temEventsBroker) expires at 4:01:43 AM on 2/23/2014.
Reason: Windows will execute 'NT TASK\Microsoft\Windows\TaskScheduler\Regular
Maintenance' scheduled task that requested waking the computer.

I also tried "powercfg -lastwake":

C:\WINDOWS\system32>powercfg -lastwake
Wake History Count - 1
Wake History [0]
Wake Source Count - 1
Wake Source [0]
Type: Wake Timer
Owner: [SERVICE] \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Windows\System32\svchost.exe (Syste
mEventsBroker)
Owner Supplied Reason: Windows will execute 'NT TASK\Microsoft\Windows\TaskS
cheduler\Regular Maintenance' scheduled task that requested waking the computer.

So it appears that "Regular Maintenance" is waking my computer. But why isn't it returning to sleep? It used to.

I then went to Power Options > Edit Plan Settings. These settings are still correct (Put the computer to sleep: 30 minutes).

Next I checked the Task Scheduler. Under "Active Tasks" I found "Regular Maintenance".

Next run time: 3:53 AM tomorrow. That very closely matches the 4:01 AM listed in "powercfg -waketimers", but I find it odd that it is after the scheduled time.
Triggers: At 3:00 AM every day

Doubling clicking on Regular Maintenance provides more detail.

Last Run Time: 5:46 AM
Last Run Result: operation completed successfully

However, another item in here is "Idle Maintenance".

Triggers: when computer is idle
Last Run Time: 5:46 AM
Last Run Result: The process terminated unexpectedly. (0x8007042B)

All of my drive partitions are scheduled to optimize weekly rather than daily. My computer is waking up daily.

Last night I turned all scheduled optimization off. This morning my computer was again woken from it sleep.

The cmd prompt gives me the same reason for the wake (Regular Maintenance).

Task Scheduler shows Regular Maintenance as:
Last Run Time: This morning at 4:36 AM
Last Run Result: The last run of the task was terminated by the user. (0x41306)

Under Idle Maintenance it shows nothing for this morning.

What does this mean? Optimization ran despite me turning it off?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to Windows EightForums, cplindem.

Are you up to date with updates? The latest dealt with the sleep issue. This thread is more or less dedicated to the problem. Please read post #788 and on.

So far as scheduled maintenance goes: Automatic Maintenance (Windows)

Hope that helps you.

Thanks for the reply, but when you say, "this thread", what thread are you referring to? Did you mean to make that a hyperlink?

I'm so sorry. I do apologize. I forgot to link it.

http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/28226-windows-8-1-refuses-sleep-20.html.

It should take you to the page with post #788 and on.

The problem either lies in the lack of the update dealing with the sleep issue or hidden virtual network adapters.

I sense you have different hours than me. If you can't fix this or if you feel the need to, post your problem there. Members are focused on that particular problem. Please let me know.

Wow, that's a long thread. I found post 788 that talks about hidden network adapters. I checked mine and some were indeed hidden (although none were ghosted). But I have no idea what they mean or if I should disable any of them. They are:

Microsoft ISATAP Adapter
Microsoft Kernel Debug Network Adapater
NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller
NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller #2
Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface

You also mentioned a specific update that I could be lacking. I see multiple posts in that thread also referring to "the update", but again, I have no idea what update it is. How do I check whether I have it or not?

Its update KB299394. Mine is dated 2/11/2014, which was the last patch Tuesday. The thing is that it's optional, which I believe won't install unless it's chosen and installed manually even though updates are set to download and install automatically. I make a habit to go in a day or two after Patch Tuesday to make sure all is ok.

Double clicking for info and link leads to this general page: Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 update rollup: February 2014

A few lines down leads to the specific page: Computer never goes to sleep even if the timer is set in Windows 8.1

I’m not that savvy to know which hidden network adapters would be ok to uninstall, although I think it would be a hidden one at least.

Make sure you have the update first. On the Start Screen > Type “update” > Windows Update should appear > Open it > Tap “View update history”.

If you have the update and it’s not sleeping, post asking which adapter would be ok to uninstall here: http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/28226-windows-8-1-refuses-sleep-21.html. Those members are savvy enough to know. I simply do not want to misguide you.

Thank you for your help. Looks like you meant KB2919394(forgot a "1"). I went into update history, but couldn't find anything like that, so I tried Windows Download Center. I searched for it there and found it. One link was for Windows Server RT (not me), another was for x64 (also not me), a third was generic Windows 8.1. However, after downloading that, Windows told me that update did not apply to my system.

However, after reading the description...
a) I am not on a wireless home network and
b) My computer does successfully go to sleep. It also successfully stays asleep during the day. It just wakes itself up in the middle of every night (presumably to run maintenance), and does not go back to sleep.

I'll try posting in that other thread as well.
