Love Windows 8 (8.1) but hate no shutdown/restart button?

Hi there, new to this forum, but certainly not to the PC. I have been dealing many years with all kinds of things PC, am fortunate enough to know the man whose father (co) invented "Collosus" the first real computer in Bletchley Park in the UK, and I work as a computer systems integrator too for a large defence company in the UK.

Now, I have upgraded a while ago from Windows 7 to 8, and finally 8.1. Love many thing, hate a few, but I like being reminded of peoples birthdays and other dates on start up. Windows 8 xx is not for everyone I admit.

Do you miss the Startup and shutdown buttons though. Here's my solution.

Download these batch files and stick them somewhere on your PC, make a shortcut to them on say your desktop - here's my desktop btw.

And here are the two files to d/load and place on your PC, just right click, make a shortcut and change the Icon accordingly (I have used Shutdown and restart icons) - enjoy!

Just right click the Start button in 8.1 and it is there plus a lot of other shortcuts.

Yeah, use an alternative Start menu like Classic Shell, Start8, etc. and you'll have the start, restart, shutdown, sleep, etc. buttons back on the desktop.

As say you have windows 8.1 press:

+ X (This will bring up the menu in my screen shot)

Then click "shutdown or sign out"

Just to note: a hybrid shutdown should include: shutdown /s /hybrid /t 0

Information on what a Hybrid shutdown is:
    Hybrid Shutdown

When you select the Shut down command from Windows 8's Power menu, the first thing that happens is that the user session shuts down just like in a regular shut down operation. However, instead of closing the kernel session, Windows hibernates the kernel session. Then, the hardware session shuts down normally.
Shutting down the user session is quicker than hibernating it, which is an improvement over the old hibernation operation. And, hibernating the kernel session is quicker than shutting it down, which is an improvement over the old shutdown operation. So, these two operations combined allow Hybrid Shutdown to shut down Windows 8 faster than previous versions of Windows.

Btw just for note, if you shut down by right clicking the Start button in Windows 8.1, it always does a full shutdown so it will always take long to boot. If you shut down using Alt+F4 on the desktop, using a Start Menu or using Win+I, it does a hybrid shutdown.
