Forgive If Only A Rant...It's well-deserved!!

Well that was the longest 36 hours of my adult life! After a week or so of tweaking version Win8.1 settings, I finally reached the inevitable (and expected) stage of having crossed the boundary of no return (by virtue, in this care, of reaching for the System Image I burned prior to my time in the sandbox.)

Imagine my horror in discovering my Win 8.0 key wasn't going to allow Win 8.1 to install the image!! 3 calls to Microsoft yielded 3 completely different ideas for troubleshooting the issue; the last of which was to--and I quote: "Buy a $40 replacement key and stop Installing windows so much!"

Finally was able to get Win 8.1 Activated via a registry hack but still no-bueno on use of the system image.
Which is why I spent the next 24 hours (and counting:) extracting files from the VHDX image trying to salvage as much data as I can.

Meanwhile I've purchased a copy of O&O's imaging suite (a better use of my $40) and now I can stop installing windows so much!

To upgrade the ENTIRE user-base en masse, did Nobody in Redmond see this coming?

Sorry for the rant. I've been up since Sunday morning, living on Mt. Dew, coffee & Cheetos.:dinesh:

I'm not sure this has any bearing on your problem, but 8.1 will not accept 8.0 keys for installation. You can activate it with an 8.0 key but you have to install using an 8.1 product code. There are generic install keys that will let you install 8.1 but they won't activate. You then have to activate with your 8.0 key. Why was the system image asking for a Product key?
