Backup and Restore after downgrading to 8.1

I really loved the feature in Windows 7 (and later in 8) that allowed to make incremental daily image backups of our drives (C: or D:, etc.) using the "Backup and restore" option. Now after having gone to 8.1 I learned that this option is no longer available. Microsoft page suggests using File History instead but to the best of me, I couldn't find any way to make daily incremental image backups with it. It just looked like a cheesier knock-off from the Time Machine in OS X.

So technically a two part question (one would work for me):

1. Can I upgrade back to Window 8 (no 8.1) without too much hassle?

2. If the first option is not available, is there a 3rd party (reliable) solution to create daily image backups of my system to a local/external hard drive?

I did some research myself and there're some paid solutions out there. Note that I'm not looking for them. I thought that the investment into Windows 8 was enough to justify its features. Now when they were taken out I can't imagine paying any more! So what's next, Microsoft? Take out File Explorer and make us buy it from somewhere else..... Arghh!
