Cached RAM slowing down computer

So I was about to make a thread about my browsers opening at an alarming SLOW rate of 10 seconds, but then I looked at my cached memory and saw it was at almost 15GB!! I restarted my computer and everything was back to normal now that the cache was cleared. What on earth is happening here? Closing down a random service perhaps? Superfetch has been on the whole time. Even if it had that much cached, I thought it was supposed to make things faster, not slow them down.

Like I said I had been doing some reckless closing of services, do you think this caused a memory leak somewhere? The only error I get in event viewer is an apphang for livecomm

What is livecomm and do you think it could be linked? I've googled it before but it just seemed vague and unimportant to me, but I may have disabled it by accident but I want to know what it does before I re-enable it.

Generally unless you have disabled a particular combination of services in the past and therefore know there will be no harmful side effects, it's a better idea to keep a log and disable one service at a time, then wait a day or two to see how the system responds.

How can anyone speculate on what happened when you disabled some unknown number of services?

I recommend a system info utility. For example LookInMyPC can output a nice table of the services in the system and the current state of each. Print out the hard copy when you make a change in case your system no longer boots. It beats trying to go from memory.

You're very right, it was mostly out of frustration, but I did a system restore as a last resort and everything is back to normal, I thank you for taking the time to respond and hopefully you won't hear from me in the future

If you disable a service you will never know what the effects are. You think e.g. you dsiable Defrag and then you find out that you cannot shrink a partition in Disk Management. There are so many interdependencies that it is better to leave the services and processes the way they are - unless your name is Mark Russinovich.

You are in uncharted territory when you disable system services. The only service configuration tested by Microsoft is the default. The big problem is that you can never be sure what won't work when you disable a service. There is no documentation anywhere that fully describes what each service does.

Setting a service startup to Manual is NOT a safe alternative to disabling it. The idea is that either the system or an application can start the service if it is needed. The service can be started if needed, but you cannot assume that this will happen. Except for services whose default startup is Manual it probably won't.

BlackViper is notorious, in the good way.

When I got Vista Pre-SP1 I did a lot of reading on Black Viper, also another site that explained the new Vista services. After about 3 months of tweaking I got the machine to run smoothly. I bought another PC with Vista SP1. All the services, except perhaps 2, were configured exactly as it showed in my LookInMyPC hardcopy table. They could have saved me a lot of sweat if they just did it the right way in the beginning.

You might not get off so easily. I went on Vista forums to ask questions about the new fangled Vista stuff and have been sequestered ever since.
