Hello gang. I created a custom refresh image the day before upgrading to 8.1. I am having shut down and sleep issues with windows 8.1 that I don't have time to troubleshoot any longer and I wish to go back to win 8 for now. I went to check that my image was there and active and this is what i get:
recimg error.png

it showed successful when I created it? I can find in in the location that is it supposed to be:
refreshimage path.png
and:customrefreshimage.png

now I'm stuck. I dont want to use the factory image and reinstall everything, and I can't cope with the bsods and hangs when trying to sleep or shutdown ( I have tried every option in that massive thread about windows 8.1 not sleeping ) please give me some guidance. thank you in advance

That is not a complete image. It cannot be used for a reinstall.

8.1 does not appear to allow refresh back to 8.0.

You only have a couple of options:

a) Try to use factory recovery image

b) Get a clean copy of 8.0 installation media and reinstall with that.

What is that pebuilder folder in your screenshot?

pebuilder is an empty folder. I dont remember what it was from. I can find out if you'd like?
anyway, why / how is that image not usable? because of 8.1 or because of something I did wrong?

pebuilder is from a program called barts pe builder. a friend needed a windows 7 recovery disc made, so i used that and a flash drive to help him out ( i believe that's what it was from ). it's an empty folder now that i should get rid of.

It is not a complete image. There are big chunks missing. That is deliberate by MS to reduce the time and size. It is only intended to be run against an existing installation. It is not intended as a complete reinstall image.

It would have been fine to run against an 8.0 installation. You don't have an 8.0 installation any more.

For future reference, there is separate built in Windows program for creating a complete image. It is a bit awkward to use, so most people use a 3rd party imaging program instead. The best free one for 8/7 is FREE Backup software for Windows 7, 8 and Server 2008 R2, 2012

thank you for your quick replies and your time. I am at my wits end. i should have left well enough alone and stayed with windows 8. so at this point though, my only options are to use my factory image to refresh back to win 8, or struggle along and try to fix the sleep / shutdown issues with 8.1? I do have a recovery flash drive that I made as soon as i got the computer, but I only want to use that as a very last resort.

Yes, I am afraid you will have to do a reinstall of 8.0. You might prefer a clean one without the oem bloatware. If so, you will have to hunt out 8.0 installation media - not difficult to find.

You should be able to boot up winpe of some kind ( from your recovery flash probabaly ), create a folder on your windows drive ( call it e.g. win81 or oldwindows, or whatever ) and move the 8.1 directories (folders) into that newly created folder.

You can then install 8.0 without formatting the partition. Your customrefresh.wim will still be there. So after reinstalling 8.0, you can refresh it using your existing customrefresh.wim
