EaseUS ToDo Backup Free 6.1 emergency disk won't boot from USB.

That's the long and the short of it. I changed the boot priority in BIOS to boot the USB first. I got it to read the USB key one time when plugged into the USB 2.0 port. While the busy circles were twirling I got a "please wait." Then I got a command prompt flicker, then a screen from Windows saying it did not boot properly.

So I turned off Secure Boot. Made the USB boot stick over again. Now I get nada no matter what. I hold down the power button to shut down. When I power back up it just goes to the regular logon screen.

I was hoping to be able to boot off the stick to avoid buying a 5 pack of CDR just to burn one disc. At least for now to have my system backed up.

Looks like Macrium Reflect Free is closer from the feature list.

Edit: but it wants to download 371 MB of WinPE. I'll be dead by that time on this network. :)

Hello, Easeus USB booting fine here (tosh laptop), 2 steps: disable secure boot, then change from uefi to csm. About Reflect, you can get it without the pe (was easy, but I don't remember how!).

Ok, you say the USB booted. But did you ever try a restore? I don't see anything about csm in BIOS. So I guess I have to get at it from uefi options panel.

Edit: that just brings me to the same settings as pressing F2 on startup. I see nothing on any page about "CSM" so I'm lost.

Seems so. I was pretty at home setting up multi-boot systems until this signing crap came along. I can imagine it's even more fun if the system you are playing around on is hosed. :(

So it looks like even if I get this USB stick to boot I won't know if the backup image is worth anything unless I risk my OS install. As usual the only real test is trial and error. I don't think I want to go that far at this time though.

Ok. Hitting F12 on boot gave me the boot menu. But when I hit Enter with USB selected it just boots the the normal logon screen. Man what a hassle!! I'm seeing why the "upgrades" to W7. This is a lot of work for what benefit? Sheesh.

Seems like all avenues are blocked. I downloaded a custom WinPE ISO image from a thread on this forum. Also the Windows 7 download tool to make a boot USB. It formats the stick and copies like 98% of the ISO, then turns red and craps out. This is a strange way to do easy backup images. :)

Think I'll wipe the USB stick, uninstall all this crap and wait for newer releases.

What thread, I will test.

You can not make a UEFI bootable USB with tool.

Very correct, the free Easeus is for mbr only, it's linux USB is capable of booting by disabling uefi in bios (shouldn't have posted about it), the program starts fine but zero usefulness and zero restore, won't see the disk\partitions. Works fine with mbr W8. Need the paid version to get gpt\uefi support.

The Reflect free I am using (PE usb) boots\restores perfect from USB\uefi. It removes any restore points, I make a new fresh one after a restore. Good luck.

Windows & 3rd party Image software, will not backup restore points.

YES, I know one of the threads that was in, bricked a new Toshiba on Windows 8 Pre-installed & Windows 7 dual boot test, unit went back to shop bricked,
Uses WinPE3 for Windows 7, not WinPE4 for Windows 8.

I would look for a 3rd party Partitioning, Backup & Cloning software, which fully supports Windows 8/8.1, UEFI, GPT & Secure Boot.
Which is signed by Microsoft.

So it looks like Macrium Reflect Free 5.2 will do it if I can figure out how to download a few hundred MB over WiFi. I hope the downloader has a resume feature. :)

Thanks for the replies. Guess it's back to Macrium again. I'm pretty sure I had 4.2 paid but I don't have the reg key to that one. :)

How right you were. So much easier with the right tools. Also to be fair I take back what I said about the WiFi here. The rescue disc maker thingy downloaded the WinPE in around 10 minutes. Not bad.

I got as far as making the USB boot. It comes up just selecting it from the boot menu with secure boot enabled. I put the settings back to normal. The rescue disc maker applet had options for supporting UEFI yadda yadda. The restore program was able to see my partitions. So it looks like I'm in business. :dinesh:
