Hi

I would be gratefull for help, just a week or two my inside and outside (USB) recorders started to work extremly slow.
Using Nero 14 i can see the real recording speed 800 - 1 500 kB/s when using 16x (22 160 kB/S). My usb samsung blu-ray recorder also work very slow - data fo 25 Gb disc takes about 4 hours.
It is a new machine, 16 Gb RAM, 3770K on board so it is a fast one but recording...
I tried deinstaling IDE i decice manager.
I tried Ashampoo, CDburnerXP - all the same.
During recording HDD 0 (c:) shows 1% usage.
No software in background - just Kaspersky

DVD and Blu-ray have no errors - veryfication ok, surface test also - only very slow.
Tested media: TDK, Sony, Panasonic (all 16x for dvd and 6x for blu-ray)

Please help

Look in Device Manager. Right click on the burners and see if DMA is enabled. Usually when super slow kicks in it's because somehow this setting gets changed to disabled.

Turn Direct Memory Access (DMA) on or off - Microsoft Windows Help

The instructions are for Windows 7 but once you get to Device Manager I'd bet it's the same.

In W8 the quick way to Device Manager is hit Winkey-x then m.

Do you have InCD installed? It's notorious for causing erratic behavior. People doing serious video encoding remove it first thing, if they run Nero at all. It's not a knock. Most people start with Nero, including me. But there comes a point when you want more control and less "kitchen sink" running. And weird things tend to happen. :)

The best single resource I know for burning/encoding/playing both hw and sw is
VideoHelp.com - Forum, Guides, Tools and hardware lists

I don't have inCd (I can't see it in installed programs) - there was a trial of PowerCD (it was mounting a phantom CD drive for my HDD so i deinstalled it)
I also deinstalled nero 14 platinium, cdburnxp and then installed again nero, with ashampoo free for tests. I use recorders for backup mostly.

When i used double usb cable for external samsung it was recording a little faster - could it be a problem with power (like setting external usb discs to sleep when nonactive?)

cyborg66 wrote "i just put the burner onto a raid port and works fine now" could it be a solution? if so how to do it?
and what about external drive?

Yeah, I didn't get the bit about USB. Never used 'em so don't know how much help I can be there. The videohelp forums have some hard core aficionados though. btw what's with DVD-R ?? I know they sell 'em cheaper but I thought all the new machines were more compatible to burning DVD+R.

Do you have InCD driver installed? I'm serious. Most video boards if you have it on they won't bother answering your questions because most of the time InCD is the culprit.

how to check Incd driver is installed?
I have Nvidia Gefoce gtx 660 - I mostly work in Photoshop

I haven't used Nero since version 6 Utlimate. There should be a listing in Control Panel Programs and Features. But often Nero components have to be removed with a "clean" tool or they leave lots of stuff hanging in the Registry.

But nero was fast recording at the begining. What tool use to make a clean uninstall of Nero?
After deintalation i used tun up utilities - i has a option of registry cleaner

My 8.1 windows was update from 8.0.

Did you have the ability to drag and drop files onto an erasable disc that already had files on it, in Explorer? If so you had InCD. You should ask on videohelp or nero forums. If someone else is more up to date on Nero maybe they will answer. But the information is out there. I don't have Nero on my system to look at.

Edit: the fact that all was well but suddenly you have issues makes me suspect InCD. That's the kind of erratic change it's known for. If not that then perhaps a Windows update has a side effect. I'd suspect Nero first, updates second, other things 20th. :)

Edit2: of course one danger of playing around with the software looking for the cause of the problem is that it could just be that something in the hardware changed. First job is the great divide. Determine if it's a hardware or software problem. Not so easy with burning.

Get rid of PowerCD, that might be causing some of it. and hes right about InCD.

It's part of some very old versions of Nero, I dont know if it is still being used. - You should try out Roxio instead, it is less irritating.

Or use IMGBURN, a free image burning tool - If you get it, be careful to opt out of all extra offers, just hit "no" for every item that is not IMGBURN. It will say.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
I have removed Nero, and used Nero clean tool and there was no change, PowerCd was removed earlier ;)
And during recording on CdburnerXP I disabled Kaspersky internet security - the change was from over 60-70 minutes to 16 minutes DVD 4,5 Gb data. I recorded twice the same iso to be sure.
I asked Kaspersky support for help - I will write if there are any effects.

Burning software is very close to the hardware. It's not high level like just copying files. In any case I'm not a fan of real time AV protection as it can create more problems that it "solves." Scanning for virus and malignant software is fine. But running real time just interferes with the normal operation of the machine.

That's why I like IMGburn, it pretty much is just a Burning Program, with no extra poopola to use up Ram or Video. Programs that have a lot of pretty images and fantastical video effects, like transparency and little pop out balloons, well they look "cool" but they use way more resources then is needed to do the actual job, and this interferes with burning speed.

Most new DVD and CD burners, and even Blu Ray burners have "Smart Burn" which prevents coaster making by keeping a huge Buffer containing the image you are burning, so when a fanciful program, like Nero or Roxio is being used, and all of their little Ram Sucking "Helper modules", this can screw you up big time.

ImgBurn is just a simple interface, with an EZ Picker for choosing what you want to do, and nothing else unless you choose to show the Log Window which is a good idea. Another program I used to use all the time was called CDR-WIN, but it was a small program, used for burning BIN+CUE images, but it was expensive, like 50 bucks for a little 5 MB Program, but it was a good program, for a while THE only program for burning BIN+CUE.

BIN+CUE was a popular format for groups who shared CD audio in the "NewsGroups" (UseNet- I don't know if most ISPs have access to it anymore, it is the original social networking platform, for posting messages and it allowed Binaries to be attached. You had to use a program called "Agent" to upload your data and download the pieces of the messages, it would automatically assemble the Binary. I havent heard of it in a long time, but that's where the making of Bin+Cue files began, because you can have one huge WAV or MP3 file, and the Cue Sheet tells the Disk Burner exactly where to pout the track breaks for Redbook Audio, it was pretty amazing actually. But this is an old protocol, it was used heavily when some of us were still using 56k Modems dialing up Newsgroups to get to the FTPs like Tucows, and the "Newsgroups" were just a function of the BBS which you could get to is you had a SLIP account and Term Server access. (I Miss those days).

But the main thing is that you can't just "Burn" your CD and then take it out and use it, you have to "Verify" it- And that's what I really like about Windows 8 and 8.1 because the Image Burn program which is built into Explorer automatically checks the Burnt Disk against the Data you selected, or the ISO image you burned.

This whole thing is odd, because with Windows 8 and New PCs and Laptops, the CPUs are faster, there is more RAM Available, and CD and DVD burners are fairly smart now, so that your Burner was affected this way, is puzzling.

I am using an old Lite-On DVD Burner, and the door does not like to open. I have an Asus SATA-II Burner on my other machine, originally that one used to burn Coasters if it was a DVD image, but when I upgraded to Windows 8, it stopped.

But I never use any of those programs like Roxio or Nero.

Most of the stuff you need if you handle a lot of ISO images is free:

IMGburn (Build a Disk or burn an image) - But it does not like to burn Audio Disks - I think it can, but I don't know how.
IMGburn actually has the best features, look in "Settings" if you get it, there are thousands of ways to set it up.

MagicISO (Mounts ISO images, and many other formats)
Windows Explorer (Built In - Assembles disks to burn or burns and mounts images)
Windows Media Player (Burns Audio Disks)
iTunes (In my opinion, the BEST, makes the best Audio CD's because it uses CD-TEXT to insert the Meta-Data).

If you want to have more options, for instance, editing ISO images, you can use UltraISO, which is about 25 bucks. The free version will do some of it, but it has a trial and nag screens. UltraISO can also hook into the main Burning engine of Nero and burn CDs and DVDs, it also has an internal burning engine, but it is not very good.
