More uses for Ramdisk?

I'm running Windows 8.1 on a desktop with 8GB of ram. I've created a 2GB Ramdisk, (SoftPerfect) and have updated my system environment variables so that all temporary files are placed on the Ramdisk. I've also set a symbolic link so that my Chrome browser cache uses the Ramdisk. I've done this to reduce read/writes on my SSD drive, and to speed up internet browsing and general use. Only a few MB of the Ramdisk appear to get used, so...

Are there any other ways that I could use the Ramdisk? both to speed up performance and reduce read/writes on my SSD which contains just operating system and programs.

Also, is there any way of monitoring the usage of the pagefile on my SSD? (No, I'm not thinking of putting that on the Ramdisk!) I think the amount of ram that I have means the pagefile doesn't get much use, but I'd be interested to find out whether I can reduce the pagefile size.

Thanks

Chris

perfmon can show whats happening with your page file (just run perfmon from the start run box) , you can add % use and max % use by pressing the + button and then choosing the pagefile from the list and adding both to it.

I used a ramdisk for a while. I used Rainmeter to check and see how much of it was being used. All I did was refresh it once in a while, that was in Win 7 tho.

Thanks for those responses, I now have Rainmeter installed and keeping me informed.

Still interested in suggestions for other uses of my Ramdisk.

I use Sketchup a bit for designs and layouts, it gets pretty slow sometimes,
any way I could speed it up? maybe move the executable into Ram?

Thanks again!

Hi there
not really sure that the RAMDISK buys you anything - especially with an SSD installed. These days an SSD is likely to outlast any standard HDD - number of read / writes is not significant with the latest generation of SSD's (unless you totally overload it by trying to run too many concurrent applications or don't have enough RAM).

An 8GB RAM system should be plenty. In fact in some cases the RAMDISK could cause a delay as you would initiate an I/O command stream TWICE for the same data access. RAMDISK technology was viable around Windows 3.1 (and earlier) time.

Even "Readyboost" isn't really pushed in W8.1 any more -- was a feature in W7 to possibly improve performance - but whether it actually did - especially on 64 bit systems was a moot point.

Cheers
